Almost everyday, I receive emails from my students asking about how to improve their English. Some of them come up with details, saying: I can’t talk fluently. My spoken language is like baby English. I can’t put words together. I can’t talk at length. I can’t express my ideas. I have nothing to say…
Though everyone seems to have different troubles, they all end up asking: Echo, what can I do? What have you been doing to learn English?
It’s a big topic though, I did take time to look back on the long journey I have made. I won’t say it’s a journey full of brilliant choices and methods, I would rather attribute to the habits that make the difference.
Tonight, I am putting down my thoughts in this article, in the hope you will make a start very soon.
If you are going to build a home in the suburbs, all you need do is pour a 6-inch slab of concrete. But if you are going to build the Empire State Building, the first thing you need to do is dig a deep hole and pour a strong foundation.
--Robert Kiyosaki
In this world which values practical efficiency, many people are eager to master a language within a crazily short time. But if you are ready to set on the journey to the real language proficiency, the first thing I want you to keep in your mind is – You can’t build a high-rise on a 6-inch slab.
Just as what I always say in the first class: language study takes time. You can’t be too much in a rush. I ask you to learn not for the test only, but for the real language proficiency which is the true asset in the long run.
Do you still remember 3S? It IS a long journey, full of turns and twists at the beginning. You might have walked for so long but the first milestone is not even close (By the way, that’s what you always write to complain). So, what’s your choice?
Reading this far, if you still ask me for shortcut, sorry I don’t think I can help. But if you tell me you are ready to take the cold long winter nights before embracing the morning sun of the sweet spring, then here is my first sharing of English learning – Read and Recite. And that is what I have been doing to learn English, to improve my mind, to equip myself with boarder knowledge.
Please don’t frown at the suggestion. I know most of you hate recitation. You might say, only kids learn by recitation, not adults.
Well, back to my childhood, I was forced to do a lot of recitation by my grandpa. Just like you, I hated reciting those poems and articles which I barely understood. Later, when I started learning New Concept English, my grandpa required me to read five articles a day. Without finishing the daily assignment, I couldn’t go for the outdoor games. The “good” thing is -- My grandpa doesn’t understand English. So most of time, I just read 2 articles and said: “Grandpa, I’m done. Can I go out and play? ”
You can’t expect too much self-discipline on a young kid. However, with rounds and rounds of reading, all the articles on that book were stored up on my mind. Reciting them came just so naturally.
You might want to ask: What’s the good to recite these stuff?
Well, I didn’t understand at that time either. That’s why I kept trying all means to leave for playing with the least reading~
When I grew older and set out on my own for the real language learning. The recitation I had done for all these years gradually demonstrated their magic power.
When I wanted to express myself, the expressions and ideas I obtained from the articles I had recited would pop out in my mind and naturally come out of my mouth.
It was like a magic.
Language study is a process that you need to “put in” something first and later on you can “take something out”.
I don’t think I am able to talk at length without reading anything about the topic. I don’t think I am able to quote some smart words without memorizing them by heart. Just as I said, you can’t build a high-rise without preparing a solid foundation. So, just as putting concrete in the foundation so as to build a tower, you need to put what you read into your mind so as to speak and write good English.
For many people, school is the end, not the beginning. So you always complain to me that you can’t keep your English level because you don’t have English class in school anymore. But in my view, it is lack of self-discipline that is No.1 defeating factor in your journey.
I once wrote in my blog: Habits make the difference. Life is really a reflection of our habits.
I always say in the class that “English learning is supposed to be a daily practice”. Believe it or not, I still keep doing Read and Recite myself, and I choose daily.
I have quite a few English pocketbooks of nice articles. When I come across some good paragraphs and smart words, I put them down in my own handbook. I have developed a habit of carrying one of these little books in my bag, from which I read a page or two when I am in the periods of waiting.
Besides, I keep some books by my pillow, from which I read the last 15 minutes before I go to sleep. When I come to some good expressions and brilliant ideas in the reading, I stop and read to memorize.
By doing all these things, the magic of “popping out” is still working on me. Sometimes in class, you are always amazed at my naturally reciting or retelling great paragraphs from some classical works. Now you know how it could happen.
Moreover, in reality, the only real asset you have is your mind. It’s the most powerful tool we have domination over. There is an expression like “you are what you eat”. But in the journey of English learning, you become what you read. You mind is so powerful that you become what you put in your head.
So, devote some of your leisure to developing the habit of Read and Recite. All unconsciously, the ideas you derive from the printed pages are stored up. They will definitely work for your future profit. With adequate “putting in”, just get sense of all the wonderful possibilities that are waiting for you to be a good English speaker.

Very truly, many learners of English language had done the same, with years hard working, before they began using it with ease...@@
Language study is a process that you need to “put in” something first and later on you can “take something out”.
看你的文章时,一切都觉得是那么的顺其自然的,那么的顺畅的,可是,要我说出一句的话,怎么听怎么看都是那么的弱智,那么别扭~~~呵呵
it's a handsome gift.
Reade and recite the NCE.
Reading and reciting the NCE.
good experience to learn.
I seem to do the same thing for many years, but I forgot all of what I had read and recited completely even if I got over them several times. Maybe you have to put them into practice, you have to show them off in the similar context, if you really use them in the real conversation, you must be excited and this becomes some stimulation, you can make a progress, so I think you have to use them quite often after reading and reciting.
不好意思,我只些简单的英语,还不能写正确的句子.我和别练口语时,好多语法是错误的,可是我不知道,不知道要用什么语法.意思对方是明白了,可是当我写出来时语法却是乱乱的.看了老师的所写,我也应该好好去做.
看了echo的文章又有了动力,继续努力不管是英语还是学习和工作。
Echo, can you recommend some materials for us to recite??
I think reading and reciting did help me a lot to learn english. But sometimes there are too many articles at hand ,i feel lost.
Thank you very much for sharing your journey of English learning .
Read and Recite, may be I ignored them in the past which had resulted in some failures in my English study. But now ,as you say ,Read and Recict having shown their magic power in my daily conversations ,on readings and writings after they becomging my daily habits ,which ,I believe, will be a real asset shining in my future life.
Thank you ^^.
Same question, could you recommend some materials for us to recite?? many thx!
ECHO,I'm so admire your persistence and kindness. Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us .We've all learned much from you .^_^ Wish u happy every day.

有点小紧张啊~~!
真的好希望一次就过啊~~!
I'm in the process of "put in"...almost everyday...and feel fruitfully^_^
I'm so eager to speak English fluently and naturally...
It is you that drive us to move on when we feel disheartened
Thank you ,Ehco!
I am absolutely shocked!!1
Your sucessful experience is both simple and useful-read and recite,I will keep it.Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
This article seems to be written at late night ,right? Echo, you're so nice, sharing your journey of English learning at the cost of your time of sleep.Thank you .What you said have been in my mind for quite a long time ,but I have not take action to do recite because I'm not sure of its effect.Your words give me a sure anwser, moreover give me motivation and encouragement. Therefore, from now on,I say to myself :you should take action~!@!
everytime i visit ur blog ,i will always get some push force to go on the journey of studying english! u have a very good point on how to master the essence of a language learning and i just want to thank u~!so much! i have also formed the habit reading your blog the moment i found this treasure cyberspace of yours~!
to some extent, the simplest way is always the most effective way.
首先要预祝这两天考口试的同学考试顺利! 有付出就一定有收获, 保持一个好心态才能有好发挥. Good luck!
大家要我推荐Read and Recite的材料. 其实很多经典的英语短文被许多书和杂志收录过. 去书店转转就能找到不少英语经典短文的handbook. 一些英语月刊杂志也都有许多好文章. 其实我们身边从来不缺少资源, 真正需要的是determination and action. 也有人说手头东西太多, 不知从何读起, 那就从手头的书里挑一本, 看到一篇喜欢的文章, 或者就一小段, read to memorize. 我很期待过了一段时间, 能听到你们告诉我Echo, these magic powers also work on me!
thanks a lot,i will continue to do it!
Thank you very much !
I have much more to learn from you .
我也是从小背新概念英语长大的!!背诵的力量真是无穷啊!!!
让我想到了那个12岁的小鹏友,金琪。A good example for us.
几处小小的语法错误:
1) You can’t build an high-rise on a 6-inch slab.其中的an 应改为 a
2) devote some of your leisure to develop the habit ... 其中的to是介词,后面应当使用动名词或名词,而不是动词!
Basically, this article helps English learners set a sound stage for better studies. Good work!
To Sos,
谢谢你指出,已经更正了:)
To MCGRADY,
Sorry I can't keep your comment. I don't expect a fight or bad words here. Thank you for your standing up, I hope you understand :)
To MCGRADY,
Whether one should pay special attention to grammar or not, the way that using dirty words to abuse someone who holds a different point of view makes you look pathetic. Have you ever heard about this, "Doing well by doing good"?
actually i did not mean to offend anyone.beg your forgiveness if i did wrong.however, the core of my words is i wanna speak out the true meaning of learning english--communication!so i said that used impolite words cos i am shocked by the wrong method of learning language.it should not be like that.i had studyed english grammar for a long time.but does not work.it is absolutely embarrassing and frustrated.by the way,my major is computer science and technology.so i am not good at english and grammar.i love english cos it is really funny and beautiful.so the incorrect and unfashioned approach of learning english tricked me,that is why how much i hate grammar.it is completely boring and ugly!so forgive me again.i guarantee i will never use those inpolite words again.sorry about that.
Echo,现在挺犹豫的.已经大三了,现在考中口是不是迟了些,或者应该直接选择高口?如果将来不从事口译方面的工作,中口证书对于英语专业的学生就业还有帮助吗?
感觉又回到了那20天的课堂,ECHO的教导一如从前,ECHO的激励一如往昔.
最近要让自己忙起来,才可以忘记那些事情,所以,我不断的学习,期待不断的超越...
i really agree what you said here. No matter chinese articles or english ones, we became whatever we read in terms of language and thinking. Reading and reciting is also a kind of journey-- a journey to explore our inner world.
Read and Recite~! I'll force myself to form this habit~! Dear Echo, does the Interpretation TextBook work? Or it's better for me to choose other literature?
虽然还从未亲临你的课堂,但我已视你为良师!
I've got so much from your blog.
Thanks a lot!
期待ECHO的READ AND RECITE作业:)
I always aske myself to pick up my English from today, but I havn't taken any action for it. I really get a magic motivation of English learning by reading your BLOG every time. From now on,
I am going to Read and Recite everyday, and form a good slef-discipline.
请问一下:“有谁想到一台小小的手机不但能通话,还能成为娱乐工具”这句中的“有谁想到”怎么翻译更好一点!Thanks!
Echo:
你觉得背新概念英语怎么样呢?我尝试过背第四册,每次都是背到前几课就坚持不下来了。因为熟背所需时间太长,每天都要上课,一天根本背不了一篇,于是就慢慢放弃了。你觉得我要坚持背下去么?还是选择其他的一些美文之类的来背?谢谢!
haha,每次不仅把你的文章看完,就连comment也一个不拉.谢谢真诚的Echo,可惜不在上海能上你的课就好了,什么时候能来深圳与Fans见一下面啊.
to daisy: who would have known
Echo:
I took part in the oral test last Sunday..and the only thing I wanna say is I finally find out how poor my oral language is~ However ,I still have another 3 chances. Anyway, just as you mentioned, language learning is a long time journey,so i will keep going on~
BTW ,winter finally visits this city,so take care! ^-^
“有谁想到” = Who could have thought that ...
To MCGRADY: Grammar is never a prime culprit. The problem with English studies by Chinese learners hinges on the lack of communication, but grammer and communication are totally not self-contradictory.
Since Echo is a teacher, it's necessary to point out such errors. Well, in practice, grammar is less important. Even native speakers will make grammatical errors, not to say Chinese people.
One of the most common grammatical errors by native English speakers is to say “The reason is because ...” rather than to say “The reason is that ...” or “This is because ...”.
Thanks a million!ECHO.english friends making QQ:361085362
Echo: “All unconsciously, the ideas you derive from the printed pages are stored up. They will definitely work for your future profit.”
In many cases, the development and improvement of one’s language ability are not a gradual or a monotonic or a proportional process as one would like to see. It may as well go through a period or a long period of accumulation of one’s knowledge and skills, without sensing noticeable progress. However, if one insists upon his/her efforts in learning, then it is possible and most likely that, one day, suddenly and unconsciously, one can realize a qualitative jump to reach a higher level of aptitude in managing the language.
Echo 的email是多少 想问你一下怎么在这么多专业课学好的同时又学好英语的?(和你一个专业的)
the way that using dirty words to abuse someone who holds a different point of view makes you look pathetic. =using dirty words to abuse someone makes you look pathetic who holds a different point of view/does not share your views.有无道理?
To begin with, I think i have been deeply impressed by your article and your way to study English. What surprised me was not the way you told us but the hardship you have overcome. I firmly believe everyone could succeed once you set out to do it. But most of time, we are just wandering here and there, day and night.I like English very much. I don't care whether i can pass the test, though lukily i have achieved a little. My point is that if one wanna master a language while he/she couldn't be determined to do it, you'd better find someone who can really help you. It is admirable that Echo has a grandpa who has really helped in her way to succeed. No pain, no gain. SET A GOAL, DO IT RIGHT NOW!
ur articles are really amazing!
I am encouraged by your words.thank you so much.
Echo,我们一直等着你布置作业呢,期待ing...
I do agree with Mr. Richard A's point view of English learning. There are different ways in improving your language ability, the most important is that you just keep on learning. And the way Ms. Echo using does show us some methods of learning.
There is a langugage and there is a grammar. Don let yourself slump in the trap of grammar.
Grateful for her nice sharing.
大家好, 这两天在成都做交传, 现在正在机场大厅里上网看大家的留言. I'm so glad to see this article inspire a lot of thinking. And I will be happier to see some of you actually take actions.
在我布置作业之前,你们也可以选择自己喜欢的材料热阿read and recite. Don't simply wait for me to assign the material(I will come up with good stuff later though). Plus, please take it daily.
Shall go catch my flight back to Shanghai:)
最近一直在做影子练习,可是跟VOA SPECIALNEWS时,还能模仿的很好,跟CNN就不行了,尤其是语速和停顿老掌握不好,怎么办呢
“怎么在这么多专业课学好的同时又学好英语?”
To students in a science or an engineering major, one possibly efficient way to master both their science major and English is to also read English textbooks in their major. Often, one needs to read more than one description of a science or an engineering concept to truly understand it. This is mainly due to the fact that the same concept can often be described by different authors from slightly different aspects or different wording. Learning something new from more than one aspect is always helpful. Reading an English textbook not only possibly helps you to learn the concept/description from a different aspect but also helps you to ponder the exact meaning of the description. The latter advantage of pondering the exact meaning is especially apparent to those who like to or try to seriously translate some parts of a textbook into Chinese or vice versa. Doing a serious translation will force you to ponder the exact meaning of those words you thought you understood well before but you probably only understood superficially or even had misunderstood the meaning when you skimmed through your Chinese or English textbook. While doing all these learning the concept from a different aspect and pondering the exact meaning as described above, your English is also improved naturally.
Thank you my dear Echo! :-D
i am glad to come here by accident,i will work hard to read and recite!
Dear Echo,
上了大三再开始背新概念还来得及吗?
your english is so sharp that I nearly cannot make any comments in english, you are not only an excellent english-speaker but also an english-learner who studied hard incontroversiblly ,I admire you and deserve my respect and importantly are also learn it very well,I quite like a sentence in this article:life is really a reflection of our habits.therefore I have to do more action and less make planns, life is fair but limited.
sorry...miss echo...perhaps because I couldnot keep relax , I have made a great mistake.I shouldnot have put "are " into this sentence: I admire you and deserve my respect and importantly are also learn it very well.but I think there are also existing some other errors...please forgive me...I promise I wil reduce gradually by my hard learning
Echo: 请问 nine hundred thousandths,是多少啊?
Echo
Dear 祎祎,
我回来啦,下午更新的blog,你应该能看到呢~
嗯,这样的练习是非常锻炼人的,反复反复反复中突然中就豁然开朗了。就如上课时,我让你们反复听过一个句子一样,这是很好的一种练习听力的习惯。很高兴听到你的收获,希望以后能听到你有更多的收获能大家分享。
你真的很温柔也很有耐心.做你的学生一定很幸福的.希望有一天可以聆听你夜莺般的声音.
I admire your students ,they can learn much from you.My major is English, but my oral English is very poor ,i can't express
my ideas very clearly in English, though i can write it in English. After reading your
experience, i am encouraged.
To Echo,
Can I adopt this article in my space? I like it so much! It seems you have a great grandfather. Now it comes a tide of reading traditional Chinese classics. There must be some wisdom in traditional private school methods.
Thank you so much for your experience!
I am trying to be an interpreter in the future like you!
今天晚上听了你的激情演讲,在你开口的一刹那,你征服了我。感谢上天给了我这个与你见面的机会。我更爱英文了,just because of you .
As an Eglish major,I really need to read and recite. And I found that if I Have a good comprehension in a passage,I will enjoy more beauty from it.Whats more,if I recited it in front of a lot of people, and got a high praise. Then this passage would be printed in my heart for a long long time. What a magic, but if there isn't any competetion waiting for me,quickly,I will turned into a lazy cat.It seems that the purpose of my English learning is not for learning itself, but for enjoying the happyness of showing.Dear Echo,I don't know if the attitude is right,If not, what can I do to overcome it?Thank you very much!
