从接到这部电影的约稿到写出这篇影评，中间相隔了四个多月，不完全是因为自己太忙，而是这部优秀的电影实在太令人着迷，着迷的结果就是对于自己文字的过于苛刻，苛刻到需要用四个月来思考和整理。

有关历史的电影大多都很沉重，有关领袖人物的传记也少不了政治色彩。但整部《女王》里没有直白的歌颂和批判，用短短一个夏天的跨度还原了一个真实的女王。很多人曾经不理解她，认为她过于冷酷、过于平淡，对待戴安娜太不公平。但《女王》给了这位内敛坚强的君主一个最为人性化的解读。扮演伊丽莎白二世的演员Helen Mirren也凭借其神形兼备的表演赢得了奥斯卡最佳女演员的殊荣。

一年后的今天，再度重温这部电影，不禁再次感慨——光环之下，多少人迷失了自我，可她却保持着矜贵的姿势，骨子里依然低调内敛；风雨之中，多少人乱了方寸，可她虽为弱女子，却表现得如此勇敢淡定；悲伤之间，多少人躲进自己的小世界里嚎啕大哭，可她，却坦然地选择静默，用毫不张扬的方式做出牺牲，用不失尊严的态度做出改变。 Just like her said: quietly, with dignity.

    影片开始于Tony Blair（托尼•布莱尔）代表工党（Labor Party）参选首相(PM: Prime Minister)。电视上沸沸扬扬地报道选举情况，布莱尔和妻子微笑着站在投票站前向大家示意。虽然结果尚未公布，但工党人士胜券在握，他们相信布莱尔将很快当选，并成为20世纪最年轻的英国首相。电视机外，女王正端庄地坐在窗边，和蔼地和正在给她画像的画师说着话： 

Queen: Have you voted yet, Mr. Crawford?
Crawford: Yes, Ma'am. I was there when they opened. First in line [1], seven o'clock. I don't mind telling you, it wasn't for Mr. Blair [2].
Queen: You're not a modernizer [3]?
Crawford: Certainly not. We're in danger of losing too much that is good about this country.
Queen: I envy you, being able to vote. Not the actual ticking of the box [4], although it would be nice to experience that once...but the sheer joy of being partial [5].
Crawford: Yes. Of course, one forgets that as sovereign [6], you're not entitled to [7] vote. Still, I don't feel sorry for you. You might not be allowed to vote, ma'am, but it is your government.
Queen: Yes. I suppose that is some consolation [8].

2.      It wasn't for Mr. Blair: 我没有把票投给布莱尔。Be for someone：支持某人。
3.      Modernizer: 现代派。Blair在选举宣言中主张改革旧传统，让英国这个古老的国家更具现代感。Crawford先生没有投票给布莱尔，说明他不支持Blair的主张。

布莱尔在他的竞选宣言（manifesto）中主张要对英国300年来的古老政体进行一次彻头彻尾的改革，为这个国家注入一股清新的时代之风。而老一辈的英国公民和女王一样，更喜爱英国世代沿袭的传统。两代人在思维上的差异已经在此处体现，为后文埋下了伏笔。

    有意思的是，尽管首相上任还是得由女王来任命，但她作为最高统治者，却没有投票的权利。此处，我们也可以听出这位终日被要求保持中立的女王也渴望体验一次可以有立场的畅快感觉。虽然女王表面上看起来威严肃穆，但并非不能亲近，言谈间也暗藏着不少浅浅的幽默和自嘲。

很快，镜头被渐渐拉近，从下往上移动，定格于女王高贵严肃的脸——看不出喜怒，透着皇族的震慑力。这会怎样一位女王呢？深居简出的生活之下，她和普通人有何等差异呢…

    果然，布莱尔以绝对优势（by a landslide）当选了英国首相，在他上任的第一天，他来到白金汉宫，接受英国女王的任命。 

这不，女王的私人秘书Robin说“The Prime Minister is on his way, ma'am.”女王纠正他：“To be, Robin. The Prime Minister to be（准首相）. I haven't asked him yet.”

在布莱尔到来之前，Robin给女王介绍这位提倡改革的新首相的背景资料，提到布莱尔的妻子切丽是个anti-monarchist（反君主制度者），她上次向女王行屈膝礼（curtsy）的样子实在是太敷衍了。女王笑了笑说，I don't measure the depth of a curtsy（我可不会以屈膝礼的深浅来取人）。

Robin又提到，布莱尔上任后首先要求首相府上下都直呼其名（on first-name terms），比如，称呼首相为“Tony”。一向恪守皇家礼教的女王当然不欣赏这位新首相的第一股改革之风，眉头一皱，打趣说：Have we sent him a protocol sheet?（我们有没有给他寄一份礼节章程好让他学习一下？）

说道皇家的礼节，还真是很有讲究，尤其是会见女王的时候。英国是君主立宪制国家（Constitutional Monarchy），现任的女王在名义上是这个国家的最高统治者，会见她当然马虎不得。布莱尔来到了宫殿，第一次以准首相的身份会见女王，传令官一边引他到觐见厅，一边给他补习礼节课：

The audience room [1] is upstairs. When we reach the audience room, I will knock. We shall go straight inside. Standing by the door, we bow, from the neck [2]. I will introduce you. The Queen will extend her hand [3]. You go to her, bow again, then shake her hand. A couple of other things - it's ma'am as in ham, not ma'am as in farm [4]. When you're in the presence [5], at no point [6] must you show your back [7].

布莱尔小心翼翼地按照传令官的指示行礼，终于可以坐下来和女王交流了。他一直面带笑容，想把气氛营造得轻松些，但女王毕竟是女王，会面新进首相，当然要表现出国家最高统治者的威信。毕竟，it’s her government，宪法赋予她督促、指导政府的责任。

Queen: My first was Winston Churchill [1]. He sat in your chair in a frock [2] coat and top hat [3]. He was kind enough to give a young girl like me quite an education.
Blair: I can imagine.
Queen: With time, one has hopefully added experience and wisdom, better enabling us to execute our constitutional responsibility, to advise, guide and warn the government of the day.
Blair: Advice which I...look forward to receiving.
Queen: Yes. We'll save that for our weekly meetings. If there's nothing else, I believe we have some business to attend to.

此时女王站起身，表示要执行任命首相的礼节了，但布莱尔没有看懂，依然满脸笑容地坐着。女王见状，用手势示意他单膝跪下，正要开口说任命词，Blair又自说自话地抢白了：

Blair: Of course. Your Majesty, my party has won the election, and so I ask your permission to form a...
Queen: No, Mr. Blair. I ask the question. The duty falls upon me, as sovereign, to invite you to become Prime Minister and to form a government in my name. （此时，布莱尔还是笑容可掬地看着女王，显然他一点都不知道流程...）
Queen: And if you agree, the custom is to say yes.
Blair: Yes.

这第一次会面，让我们看到一个恪守传统制度的女王和一个提倡平等、追求新风的年轻政治家之间的碰撞。虽然有着不同的价值观，但面对这位经历过二战并且凡事以人民和国家为先的女王，新首相还是表现出足够的理解和尊重，而之后发生的一场危机，也对布莱尔进行了一次彻底的考验。

就在此刻，戴安娜王妃在法国发生了车祸。影片在此处不停地闪过戴妃当年的影像照片、和媒体记者疯狂追逐的场面。画面上有很多粗大的粒子，颇有纪录片的味道。虽然至始至终没有直接出现车祸现场，但是含蓄地切换着一组镜头：飞驰的轿车，紧随其后的摩托，刺眼的车头灯，晃眼的相机镜头，最后定格于事发的桥洞…随后，整部影片对于女王的描写都围绕着戴妃的事故展开——

车祸的消息很快传到了英国，女王在半夜被告知戴妃的状况很不乐观。女王的丈夫菲利浦亲王十分不满戴妃平白无故又跑到了巴黎，此时的女王，也没有多去思考这件事情将在民众间掀起的波澜。当焦虑的查尔斯王子表示要坐私人飞机到法国看望受伤的戴妃时，女王坚持要维持王室在民众间的形象——低调、不过分铺张、按规章程序办事。

Charles: I should go to Paris. I told my people to organize a jet.
Queen: What, a private one?
Charles: Yes.
Queen: Isn’t that the sort of extravagance [1] they attack us for?
Charles: How else can I get to Paris at this time of night?
Queen’s Mother: Charles, dear, use the royal flight. They keep one plane on permanent standby in case I should kick the bucket [2].
Queen: No, Mummy, he can't. This isn't a matter of state [3].
Charles: What are you talking about?
Queen: Diana is not one of the royal family. She's not an HRH [4]. It's a private matter.

对于戴安娜王妃，女王一直怀有复杂的感情。虽然一开始，她和菲利普亲王都满心欢喜地接纳这位美丽善良的平民姑娘成为儿媳，但多年相处下来，传统的她无法认同黛安娜频繁游走在社交圈，过度曝光于媒体，并且在无形中给王室制造了很多麻烦。离婚后的戴安娜已经不再是王室的成员，也不再是公主殿下。女王认为不该用皇家的待遇来处理这件事情。

但不久，噩耗传来，戴妃在车祸中丧生。女王的心一下子沉了下来。她走过孙子的房间，看到查尔斯正噙着泪水安抚两个小王子。作为母亲和祖母，她无疑是心疼之至的，再怎么说，戴妃也是小王子的母亲啊。女王低头片刻，同意派一部王室的飞机把戴妃的遗体从巴黎运回来。

此时的伦敦上空仿佛为戴安娜披上了一层哀悼的黑纱，成千上万的市民，无论男女老少，自发来到白金汉宫前，为戴安娜献花。花束很快堆满了整个白金汉宫门口，无数人在那里悼念，情不自禁地落泪。不仅仅是伦敦，即使在繁忙的巴黎，人们也会停下手中的事务，在戴妃灵柩经过的路上脱帽致哀。

在人民心里，戴安娜是位天使。她同情弱者，热衷慈善，人们看到她美丽的容颜下有颗平易近人、宽容博爱的心，在神秘低调的王室家族中，显得那么惹人恋爱、受人拥戴。

刚刚上任的首相布莱尔致电给女王请示应该如何安排戴妃的丧事。布莱尔希望顺民意举办一个公众葬礼，好让人民一起缅怀过世的王妃。但是女王却坚持静静地办个私人葬礼，一来这是死者家属的愿望；二来，女王不想她身边的人重蹈戴妃的覆辙。正如她讲，戴安娜已经为媒体曝光付出了代价。作为王室领袖，她必须保护家人不受伤害，也不允许媒体再借机炒作，把原本可以在安静中悼念死者的葬礼搞成闹哄哄的集市活动。

Blair: ls it your intention to make some kind of appearance or statement?
Queen: No. No, certainly not. No one in the royal family will speak publicly. This is a private matter. We would appreciate it if it could be respected as such.
Blair: I see. I don't suppose anyone has thought about the funeral yet.
Queen: We've spoken with the Spencer family [1], and it is their express wish that this should be a private funeral with a memorial service to follow. As Diana was no longer a member of the royal family, we must respect their wishes.
Blair: I see. You don't feel that in view of her high profile [2] and popularity, it might be an idea to pay tribute to her life and achievements, or even just to her as a mother?
Queen: Well, as I said, it's her family's wish.
Blair: And the public, ma'am, the British people? 'You don't think that private funeral might be denying them a chance...
Queen: A chance to what?
Blair: 'To share in the grief? '
Queen: This is a family funeral, Mr Blair, not a fairground [3] attraction. I think the Princess has already paid a high enough price for exposure to the press, don't you? If there's nothing else, the children have to be looked after.

Blair: Though her own life was often sadly touched by tragedy, she touched the lives of so many others in Britain and throughout the world with joy and with comfort. The people everywhere, not just here in Britain, everywhere, they kept faith with Princess Diana. They liked her. They loved her. They regarded her as one of the people. She was the people's princess...and that's how she will stay, how she will remain in our hearts and in our memories forever.

在电视直播的演讲中，布莱尔赞美戴安娜的一生都紧紧地民众连在一起，同样地，民众也会记住这位人民的王妃。布莱尔在智囊团的成功策划下得到了人民的拥护和媒体的吹捧，而始终选择沉默的王室却经受着人民的责备和媒体的曲解。查尔斯终于忍不住了，他暗示布莱尔——古老守旧的王室和这个国家都需要一股现代派的改革。

在查尔斯的安排下，负责葬礼仪式的御前大使Lord Airlie给布莱尔通了电话，循规蹈矩的大使一再强调——为一位ex-HRH操持皇家规格的葬礼没有“先例”可循，为了不出差错，他请布莱尔派一些政府人员过去开会，共同讨论葬礼的事宜。于是，Alstair被布莱尔委任参加策划会。当Alstair看到迂腐的皇家官员开了两个半小时的会，就为了在两种差别不大的殡车中做一个选择时，他和大多数民众一样，对于王室的成见更深了。

第二天早晨，Robin向女王传达策划小组达成一致的意见，认为公开的葬礼更适时宜。看到王室的官员都倾向布莱尔这边，女王无奈地做出了让步。听Robin描述戴妃葬礼的具体内容时，女王心里很不是滋味。这位伤透王室家族心的平民姑娘为何在人民心里享有如此大的感召力，同样一个戴安娜，难道王室中的她和民众心里的她是两个人么？女王静默地思考着…

 

Robin: The Lord Chamberlain faxed these plans for you to consider. There is now general agreement, ma'am, that a public funeral would be more appropriate.
Queen: I see. And what form will this funeral take?
Robin: At the moment, they're suggesting...basing it on Tay Bridge [1].
Queen Mother: Tay Bridge? Tay Bridge is the code name for my funeral.
Robin: Indeed, ma'am, but it would be for practical reasons only. It's the only one which has been rehearsed, the only one that could be put together in time.
Queen Mother: But I supervised those plans myself.
Robin: Indeed, and the Lord Chamberlain was at pains to stress that the spirit of the occasion will be quite different. For example, the suggestion is that instead of 400 soldiers, 400 representatives of the Princess's charities march behind the coffin. And, instead of foreign heads of state [2] and crowned heads of Europe [3], the guests would include a sprinkling of [4] actors of stage and screen, fashion designers and other...celebrities. Queen Mother: Celebrities?
Queen: Oh. Er... was there anything else?
Robin: No, ma'am. Oh, yes, one other thing. The police commissioner [5] was keen that you consider the idea of a condolence book [6]. It would give the growing crowds something to do, make marshalling [7] them easier. Queen: Oh, yes. Yes, of course.
Robin: Oh, and the flowers.
Queen: What flowers?
Robin: The flowers outside Buckingham Palace. They're blocking the main gate, and making things difficult for the changing of the guard.
Queen: Fine. Just move them away.
Robin: The Lord Chamberlain was wondering whether we shouldn't leave the flowers and send the guards through the north gate.
Queen: Oh, yes. Yes, of course. Yes, quite right.

在这种情况下，女王开始重新审视自己的做法。其实，她并没有如媒体上所宣传的那样憎恶戴妃，只是习惯了冷静低调处事，要一下子接受戴妃热情高调地在媒体上频频露面，并不容易。她也试图去理解戴安娜的亲民之举，但唯一不能让她接受的是戴妃在媒体上有意无意地公开自己不幸的婚姻和浪漫的绯闻，又公然发表对于王室的负面评论。俗话说：“家丑不可外扬”，普通人家尚是如此，更何况是无比尊贵的王室家族呢？这段戴妃的经典访谈虽然博得了千万民众的同情，但也丢尽了英国王室的威仪。若是以前看到这段采访的重播，女王总是在沉默中转身离开，但这次，她却主动观看了起来：

News: Do you think you will ever be queen?
Diana: No, I don't. No.
News: Why do you think that?
Diana: I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts, in people's hearts, but I don't see myself being queen of this country. I don't think many people want me to be queen. When I say that many people, I mean the establishment [1] I married into, because they've decided that I'm a non-starter [2]. They see me as a threat of some kind. I don't go by a rulebook. I lead from the heart, not the head, and it's got me into trouble in my work.
News: Was Mrs Parker Bowles [3] a factor in the breakdown of your marriage?
Diana: There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.

本以为在丧礼问题上做出让步，整个事件就能恢复平静。她希望生活能够恢复正常，希望两个小王子不要过度悲伤。于是，出于保护家人的愿望，女王和家人一起离开伦敦，去了苏格兰行宫狩猎。可是，她却没有意识到——白金汉宫上空荡荡的旗杆（旗帜的存在象征王室成员在白金汉宫里）让民众对王室的误解更深了。布莱尔实在不忍看到王室给媒体提供了那么多负面话题，再次给女王打去了电话…

Queen: Robin had a call from the Prime Minister, who expressed his concern.
Philip: About what?
Queen: The flag above Buckingham Palace. He thinks it should be flying at half-mast [1].
Philip: I hope Robin said there isn't a flag above Buckingham Palace. There's the Royal Standard, which flies to denote [2] the presence of the monarch. Since you're here, the flagpole is bare, just as it should be.
Charles: Isn't it possible that for some people, the Royal Standard is just a flag, and the flagpole being bare sends out the wrong signal?
Queen: No, that's not the point.
Philip: The point is it's over 400 years old. It's never been lowered for anyone.
Queen Mother: (to Charles). Your grandfather didn't get the flat at half-mast when he died, and if your mother died tomorrow, she wouldn't either.
Charles: Yes, Granny, but in a situation like this, one has to be flexible. It is just a flag.
Queen: What about the Union Jack [3] was Mr Blair's next suggestion？
Philip: Next, he'll suggest you change your name to Hilda [4]. Who does he think he's talking to? You're the sovereign. You don't get dictated [5] to. You conceded [6] the idea of a public funeral. You've opened the parks. That's enough. You wait. In 48 hours, this will all have calmed down.

但事态的发展显然出乎了菲利普亲王的预料。人民对戴安娜的纪念活动空前高涨，伦敦陷入了举国同哀的状态。人们为了在悼念簿上留言情愿排十几个小时的长队，献给戴妃的花束也早已铺成花海。人们不理解为何此时唯独王室无动于衷，四天里，没有一位王室成员公开致悼，没有一束鲜花，没有一句吊唁，没有让公众看到一滴眼泪。此时，各家报纸更是紧紧跟踪事态的发展，而民众的情绪在媒体的煽动之下也愈发激动了。

布莱尔不得不再次致电女王，劝说她和王室的成员赶快回来伦敦，对戴妃的过世向民众做出回应。女王边听电话，边翻阅报纸，默默地忍受大家齐声指责她冷酷无情。当布莱尔要求她回伦敦“安抚英国人民的悲伤情绪”时，她终于抑制不住，带着女王的威严告诉布莱尔：没有人比我更了解我的人民，他们拥有智慧和判断力，用不了多久，他们就能摆脱这种由媒体挑起的激动情绪，选择静默地哀悼。这是这个国家的处事风格——毫不张扬，不失尊严。

Blair:Good morning, your Majesty [1]. Sorry to disturb, but I was wondering if you'd seen today's papers [2]?Queen:We've managed to look at one or two, yes.
Blair:ln which case, my next question would be whether you felt some kind of response might be necessary?
Queen:No. I believe a few over-eager editors are doing their best to sell newspapers. It would be a mistake to dance to their tune [3].
Blair:Under normal circumstances, I would agree, but...Well, my advisors have been taking the temperature among people on the streets, and well, the information I'm getting is that the mood is quite delicate.
Queen:So, what would you suggest, Prime Minister? Some kind of a statement?
Blair: No, ma'am. The moment for statements has passed. I would suggest flying the flag at half-mast above Buckingham Palace and coming down to London at the earliest opportunity. It would be of great comfort to your people. And would help them with their grief.
Queen:"Their grief"? If you imagine I'm going to come to London, before I attend to my grandchildren, who've just lost their mother...then you're mistaken. I doubt there is anyone who knows the British people more than I do, nor who has greater faith in their wisdom and judgment. And it is my belief that they will, at any moment, reject this... this mood, which is being stirred up [4] by the press, in favor of a period of restrained [5] grief and sober [6], private mourning. That's the way we do things in this country - quietly, with dignity. It's what the rest of the world admires us for.
Blair:If that's your decision, ma'am, the government will support it. Let's keep in touch.
Queen:Yes, let's.

此时，对于女王忠心耿耿的Robin实在不忍看着女王独自承受民众的误解，悄悄地和布莱尔沟通，希望布莱尔可以帮助这位深深热爱人民的女王，帮助她走出困境，不要让媒体借用民众来打击她。

不论戴安娜在民众心里拥有多少光环，对于女王来说肯定不是一个愉快的回忆。她是一个国家的君主，曾经勇敢地站出来要和国家一起经历战争的风雨。曾经，她的人民那么爱戴她、尊敬她，而现在，却因为一个不再是王室成员的女子反对她，想到这些，女王的心都碎了，但她又不能在别人面前显示出半点柔弱与可怜。在众人面前，她还是女王——高抬下巴，镇静坦然，低调内敛，把一切情感都藏匿于心。可是，她毕竟也是一个凡人，面对一次次的打击，她也有脆弱无助的时候。此时，她一个人来到原野，靠着车门独自落泪。镜头对着她哭泣的背影，削瘦的双肩不住地颤抖，人们看到一位威严的君王背后同样需要支持和关怀的内心…

然而，事态的发展变得更加严重了。布莱尔试图压制媒体对于王室的批评浪潮，希望英国人民能够尊重并体会王室的悲痛心情。但媒体却更加变本加厉地渲染王室的冷漠。由此，人民的呼声不再仅仅针对王室，而是到了要废除君主制的地步。任何尊贵的传统在这样的呼声面前都显得如此脆弱，女王第一次感到那么力不从心。

在伊丽莎白还是个女孩的时候，就从劳累致死的父亲手里接过了君王的权杖，从此把自己的一生奉献给了国家和人民。50年来，她尽忠职守，用一种不张扬的方式爱她的人民。难道如今时代真的变了么？难道自己的观念和行为已经跟不上现代民众了么？有些无助的女王把自己的想法告诉了母亲：

影片中特别提到了一头十四叉的牡鹿，它高贵、优雅、而且罕见。作为王室圈养的猎物，它的命运终究逃不出猎人的子弹（当时菲利普带着小王子去打猎，就是为了捕到这只牡鹿）。当女王独自在原野上掩面而泣的时候，那只牡鹿闯进了女王的视线，她一边惊叹于它的美丽，一边驱赶它免遭杀戮。但最后，这头鹿却死于一个商人之手。女王得知后，专程前去祭拜已经被断头的牡鹿。站在鹿头面前，她轻轻地抚摸它的伤口，默默地为它祈祷，虽然还是一脸静默的表情，却让人深深体会到从内心流淌出的悲伤…

这头牡鹿的命运不是像极了戴安娜么？作为女人，女王何尝不同情着戴安娜并不幸福的婚姻；作为爱民的君主，女王何尝不曾赞美戴安娜的爱心。不管这个女子曾经如何伤害了她苦苦维护的家庭和传统，但她毕竟在民众间获得了一种王室头衔无法买到的尊严。如今，一头被商人猎杀的牡鹿都会让女王如此牵挂和悲伤，听闻戴妃的悲惨命运，心中又怎能没有悼念之情呢？终于，女王决定回到伦敦面对公众对戴安娜的过世表示哀悼。

可是媒体还是不肯放过她，报纸的头版赫然写着“The palace keels down to Blair”。民众也没有轻易原谅她，那些纪念王妃的卡片上写着“They don’t deserve you.”“They have your blood on their hands.”女王慢步走着，读着不断刺痛她心的悼念卡，她想流泪，却极力克制，然后转过身对着民众微笑再微笑。一个小女孩把手里的鲜花献给她时，她说，谢谢。看到这里，相信观众心里都为她难过。

但人民还是爱她的，看到尊贵的女王在此刻终于站到了人民这边，公众也表现出足够的宽容。当女王端庄地缓步走过，向大家点头致意时，人们也真诚地回以屈膝礼。这个场面没有台词，却格外感人。

随后，女王通过电视直播，发表了对戴妃的悼词。她依然不懂得渲染和煽动，依然那么淡然内敛。她没有为自己做任何辩解，只是从内心里希望自己不仅仅是一个符号和肖像，而是一位对这个国家和人民怀有深厚感情的女王，是一位习惯在沉默中消化悲伤的长辈。 

Queen: Since last Sunday's dreadful news, we have seen, throughout Britain and around the world, an overwhelming expression of sadness at Diana's death. We have all been trying, in our different ways, to cope. It is not easy to express a sense of loss, since the initial shock is often succeeded by other feelings, disbelief, incomprehension, anger and concern for those who remain. We have all felt those emotions in these last few days, so what I say to you now, as your Queen, and as a grandmother, I say from my heart…Millions who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her. I, for one, believe there are lessons to be drawn from her life, and from the extraordinary and moving reaction to her death. I share in your determination to cherish her memory. I hope that, tomorrow, we can all, wherever we are, join in expressing our grief at Diana's loss and gratitude for her all-too-short life. May those who died rest in peace, and may we, each and every one of us, thank God for someone who made many, many people happy.
