upstart: 暴发户；新贵

改革开放初期，涌现出一批一夜暴富的人，就是这里的upstart。Upstart作动词用时，意思是“突然跳起，突然发”，其“暴发户”的含义就是由此引申而来。此外，upstart还可作形容词用，表示“暴富的”、“狂妄自大的”。例如：an upstart interloper（无营业执照的暴发户）；He dreaded their upstart ambition.（他惧怕他们的狂妄野心。）
