The former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has been buried in his birthplace the day after his execution for crimes against humanity. His two sons killed by American troops 4 months after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 are also buried there. Peter Greste reports from Baghdad.
"Well before dawn, in the dark cold winter air, Saddam Hussein’s family buried the executed leader in the village of Al-Ouja close to his hometown of Tikrit. A US helicopter flew his body to an old air force base north of the city late at night and handed the coffin to a delegation led by his own tribal chief and the governor of the Salahuddin province. A group of mourners then witnessed the burial, at 3 a.m. in the 90 chamber close to a mosque in Al-Ouja, the town of Saddam’s birth. His funeral comes a day after the ousted leader was hanged for crimes against humanity, for the deaths of 148 Shiites in the town of Dujail in 1982. A non-official video of the moment of execution filmed on a cell phone camera has now been posted on the internet. As Saddam stands with a noose around his neck, a voice can be heard telling him to go to hell. He smiles and says “You go to hell”. He then recites the Islamic statement of faith and the trapdoor opens.
