People who have different culture background, race, age and gender may appreciate different movies. But good movies have a common characteristic. They have mysterious powers that not only can please our eyes and ears but intensively impact our hearts also. One of the movies impressed me deeply is “The Day After Tomorrow”. It is a tragic movie which showed us one of the possibilities that climate change may bring to us. In the movie we saw that the New York city was firstly flooded due to tsunami and then in the northern part of the U.S. the air temperature decreased so sharply and deeply that people cannot survive. Human beings are so fragile before the power of the Nature. Why was the Earth fallen into such a disaster? It is explained by scientists that the large emission of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide, increased the air temperature. Melting of the glaciers changed the salinity of the oceans. As a result, the original balance of ocean circulation was damaged. That’s the cause of the extreme weathers.
One of my friends told me that the scenario is based on a real proposal that a group of scientists submitted to the U.S. government. I don’t know whether the scientific evidence behind the movie is strong or not, but I believe the tragedy is not merely imagination. As climate change is mentioned, most people may think of global warming. Actually, climate change can bring about different extreme weathers in different areas of the world while some of them are in contrast, such as extreme coldness and extreme hotness, flooding and drought. Yesterday was the World Water Day. I learnt from news that water shortage is prevalent in many areas, especially in developing countries. In fact, water security is closely related to climate change. It is estimated that if the average air temperature of the world rises 2 degree Celsius , 2 billion people will be threatened by water shortage. If the temperature rises 4 degree Celsius, the number of people who face drinking crisis will be expanded to 3.2 billion.
Climate change shouldn’t be an issue concerned only by scientists. For every creature in this planet it is a matter of life-and-death. If we don’t take action now the consequences may not come today, not tomorrow, but may come the day after tomorrow.
