Love the Person You Are
10 tips for learning to love and accept yourself
26
agazines, TV and movies overwhelm us with images of super-thin, beautiful women and tall, handsome men. We’re surrounded by pictures of models, movie stars and athletes with seemingly perfect bodies. By comparison, when most of us look in the mirror, we fall short.
The average model is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. But only 4 percent of women are born with this type of frame. So the goal to look like a fashion model is unreasonable for the other 96 percent of women.
Impossible standards
When we constantly compare ourselves to an impossible standard, we never measure up. As a result, we risk developing a poor opinion of our own bodies. The way we view our bodies is important because it relates directly to our self-esteem.
“Self-esteem” is defined as a healthy, positive feeling about oneself. Throughout the day, the thoughts we have about ourselves powerfully affect our self-esteem. “These thoughts can be accurate and helpful, or they can be false and damaging,” says therapist Suzanne Harrill.

Self-esteem not only determines how we feel about ourselves, but also influences how we act. Therefore it’s vital to develop a healthy self-esteem.
How to improve your self-esteem
J Think and speak positively about yourself.
J Eat healthily. (This will help you maintain a normal weight. And you’ll feel better physically.)
J Be realistic about what size you are naturally. Your body’s size is determined as much by your genes as by your lifestyle.
J Look in the mirror and find one positive point for every negative thing you find.
J Recognize that your body is brilliant masterpiece, able to do countless things.
J Make the most of your talents and abilities.
J Put more emphasis on your inner qualities than your outer qualities.
J Stop comparing yourself to others.
J Recognize that you are unique. This makes you special and valuable.
J Help others. Your value will increase in their eyes and in yours.
Your body is the one you’ll live with from now on. Learning to love it will make you a happier, more productive individual.
