(Mia)

Her comments on America trying to look old and China trying to look young is interesting. An email letter from a former student, a pretty girl with distinct personality:

How are you?
My study went on well, so far so good. Besides study, I pick up singing again, not in chorus but a Kent's choir. It's pretty interesting experience. We will give performance in Feb, March and May, I am excited about it. It's been a long time. My last memory about singing on stage was 7 years ago. This semester, all the courses are relevant to how to teach in a multicultural classroom/society, how to manage conflicts....

I spent my winter break with D. We went to see a play called "Medea goes to Jail" last weekend at Statetheatre. I laughed from the beginning to the end. It was a good play, kinda preachy, but very funny as well as witty. The theatre looks like an antique, although America is a young country. America is a young country but tries hard to look old. China has a long history but intends to look young.

Well, people at Kent State are cool, I don't feel much racial tension, every one minds their own study. However, some American students are very ignorant and unbelieveably simple. I guess that's why we think Americans are a whole bunch of happy people. They don't know about outside world, thus they are carefree...I find it is amusing.

well, just something that I've been through. Big Hi to you!

To: Author, Ms Lu,
Very interesting!!@@
Your posting was viewed with great interest, enjoyed it very much. "although America is a young country. “America is a young country but tries hard to look old. China has a long history but intends to look young.” as your student commented.

However, at personal level, as I thought, though China has a very long history, yet the “republic” in its modern sense, economically and politically speaking is still very Young; while the American as known as young country is backed with English or West culture which in the same term and economically and politically speaking, pretty advanced; this maybe reflects some of the westerners’ inner judgment about China; This way maybe we shall think and we do have much to catch up.

I did not think too much when I post it. Your perspective regarding China and America in terms of being young or old is thought provoking. You are right in saying that we do have much to catch up as far as economic development is concerned. Culturally, we have much to share.

Thank you for being present.
