Have just received an email from a German friend. He wrote “You probably have received this several times from other parties – but  just in case you haven't ... Something to get your teeth into over the holiday, I thought.” Would like to share it with people interested in the language.

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant,
nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins
weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are
candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for
granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work
slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor
is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce
and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural
of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2
indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend?
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,
what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats
vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English
speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what
language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and
send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a
wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a
language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill
in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the
creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all That is
why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out,
they are invisible.

People can say similar things about Chinese. For example, 吕乐 does not necessarily mean that 小两口同乐. :)

Yes, there are a quite few schoolmates here.  But we are all from engineering school somehow.  It has been fascinating to watch the change you experienced there in China for the last 15 to 20 years.  But, the question is what’s next?  When the so call “catch up game” is over, you will probably find yourself in the middle of ocean, and maybe ahead of all the others.  What do you do then, where do you go?  Are there enough great minds with vision or wisdom to take leads?  Can these minds be trained in your school now?  US have very lousy basic education, but we still have few top notch labs and schools to keep here competitive.  Yes, I still remember college life; I think we were trained pretty well mechanically as we can be at top of the game as we do today.  But, we can never be “intellectual”   Sorry, it has nothing to do with English or college life.  But, it might be fun to think about it:):)

Generally speaking, boys in Engineering department will pay attention to or know many girls in English department whereas girls in English department will only know relatively very few boys in Engineering department. That is because girls in English department all look so different to boys in Engineering department whereas boys in Engineering department seem all the same or similar to girls in English department (or at least girls think boys in Engineering department all the same or similar). Since Francis knew lule very well and he was obviously distinct at the time, one may reasonably argue that lule would most likely know Francis too, i.e., she is able to figure out who this Francis is if she thinks really hard though she may not openly admit it here. :)

To Francis: The so called catch up game will not be over soon enough for our generation to see, probably not even the next generation. (not in all aspects of course). However, there are as many great minds in China as everywhere in the world, being affluent or underdeveloped, being competitive or week. What do you mean by “great minds”? I do not really think US has more great minds than any other countries. You seem to be infected with American ethnocentricity. Please don’t get me wrong. US is a great country. I have been there for many times and I love it. In the same way, China is a great country but can never claim to be better than others. BTY, do you know we are going to celebrate the centennial anniversary in October?

To coolboy: Your theory of boys and girls in the two departments cannot be applied to those days. As far as I remember I paid attention to nothing except what I was learning. Therefore, I have no way to figure out who is who. Young people now are luckier, having more fun in life, although I am not sure if they are more “intellectual” as mentioned by Francis.

When I was in college, I tried very, very hard to find a girl who was paying attention to nothing except what she was learning (mainly because coolboy was paid attention and troubled by too many girls who liked to pay attention to cool boys). But, unfortunately, I failed. I wish I had attended 上理 where there appeared to be many pretty and graceful girls like lule who were only paying attention to what they were learning. :)

Of course, there is no shortage of talents in China.  My question is in fact whether or not there is a system or an environment to cultivate such talents and make them Great, not just successful.  It’s only my limited observation thought that people are extremely competitive in China today, but are somehow homogeneous in a way they talk, the goal they set and the path they follow, and of course, everything is running in a rapid pace.  There is no tolerance for mistake, and there is little time for a pause in once journey.  Therefore, it’s hard for people to try something new or do something different.  It’s perfectly right to follow certain path which has been proved to be a successful track.  Is there enough space given to the young people to explore, to learn rather than being taught, and have opportunities to come back after some mistakes or failures?

Maybe I am wrong as Coolboy seems to have enough time to explore.  I don’t remember how big the school was at that time.  There were at least hundreds of students; it could be a full time job if you try to follow who’s who on the campus.  Nevertheless, it’s nothing strange or special to remember couple names which are on the top or at bottom for that matter.  Lule was one the best at our time, obviously still is.  I bet there are a lot of Boys and Girls can still remember her.  Besides, how can you forget a unique name with a HAPPY ending?

Yes, agree. People here are obsessed with pursuing wealth and success, having very little time to think, to learn from mistakes. However, educators and social scientists are beginning to think about the effect of the obsession. These days, words that are frequently heard in the university include originality, creativity,素质教育,人文关怀, etc. It will take some time to take effect, of course. We have to know the real university education began in 1978.

Thank you and those who remember me because of my unique name. Do I need to thank my parents for that?:)

To Francis:

Of course, it was impossible to follow and explore all the girls in campus equally or aimlessly. We learnt a lesson in our English class at the time entitled “How to Study” that introduced an SQ3R strategy on how to study efficiently: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Revise.

I believe one may apply this strategy to many other things including how to find a good girlfriend for a boy or how to find a good boyfriend for a girl. For example, you first go through the “survey” process by excluding those who are too old or too young, too this or too that. Then you “question”, casually asking “are you from North or South?” “What color do you like most?” “Do you like seafood or can you cook a nice fish dish?” etc. The measure of how much you can “read” her mind or vice versa should give you an idea of how much commonality you two have. You then review how much you are able to “recite” what you have told her in previous conversation(s), which should give you an objective measure of how much you are actually close to her. If you find the overall score too low after certain period, then you “revise” it to switch to a different one. :)
