此图描绘南唐中主李景与其弟景遂，景达，景过会棋情景。头戴高帽，手持盘盒，居中观棋者为中主李景，对弈者是齐王景达和江王景过，人物容貌写实，个性迥异。衣纹细劲曲折，略带顿挫抖动。四人身后屏风上画白居易“偶眠”诗意，其间又有一扇山水小屏风。故画名日“重屏”。
此画〈墨缘汇观〉，〈西清札记〉，〈石渠宝笈三编〉等画著录。另有数本，以〈重屏图〉，〈观弈图〉等名称见于〈寓意编〉，〈清河书画舫〉等书。现存二本，一本藏美国佛利尔美术馆，属明代摹本；此本藏故宫博物院，艺术水平较高，或认为是接近原作的宋人摹本。
周文矩（公元十世纪），建康句容人（今南京），南唐画院翰林待诏。善画人物，山川，楼观，尤精仕女。所画闰阁妇女，继承唐代周日方传统，注重刻画人物表情动态和内在精神，而不过多施朱傅粉或华美佩饰，形象更展自然秀丽。他的笔法吸取李煜画法用笔，线条瘦硬，略带颤动，种之为“战笔”描，刚柔相齐，独具一格。他在画院深受李煜赏识，曾与顾闳中同时奉命画〈韩熙载夜宴图〉。
