Some orphan crops cannot be grown from seeds. Instead, cuttings, roots, and sale cell cultures will be gathered from gene banks. And the project will finance research into lower-cost ways to protect these crops.

* cutting 插条 A cutting is a part of a plant, for example a leaf or part of a stem, that you cut from the plant and use in order to grow a new plant.

* culture （植物的）栽培 ; （动物 , 如蜂、 蚕等 , 良种的）培育 (eg bees, silkworms, etc) to obtain a crop or improve the species.

The project will also finance and information system for plant’s breeders to search gene banks worldwide. They will be able to look for plants with the right qualities to resist new diseases and the effects of climate change.

本项目还将资助建立一个植物育种工作者在全球范围内可以查询基因库的信息系统。他们可以寻找具有良好性状的品种来抗病或应对气候的变化。

Still another goal is to improve communications between farmers and plant breeders. The organizers say they look forward to a time when breeders in Africa can find the same crop genetic information as those in Europe and North America.

The Bill & Mellintic Gercy and Melinda Gates fFoundation has agreed to provide thirty million dollars for the project. Norway will provide seven and one-half million dollars.

The Global Crop Diversity Trust says at least four hundred fifty thousand seed simples samples will go into the swip baredSvalbard Global Seed voteVault. The trust and the government of Norway are building base this in the side of the a mountain on an island near the North Pole
