We continue our Foreign Students Series this week with a question from a doctor at a hospital in Vietnam. Trung kin TangTran Kinh Thanh in Ho Chi Minh City asks how a foreign doctor can become an American doctor.

One way is to complete a medical residency in the United States. A residency is a period of hospital training for medical school graduates.

方法之一就是在美国完成医师培训。医师培训是对医学院的研究生进行的一段时间的医院培训。

To be accepted, foreign-trained doctors need approval from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. The process involves passing several tests. After that, foreign doctors can receive a visa to stay in the United States, at least for the training period.

要接受这种培训，外国培养的医生需要经过外国医生研究生教育委员会的批准，其程序包括通过几项测试，之后外国医生会取得美国的签证，至少在实习期是这样。

Practicing medicine in the United States also involves other staffssteps.

在美国实际行医还需要别的步骤。

But the first thing that foreign-trained doctors have to do is make sure they attended a recognized medical school. It has to be listed in the famous FAIMER International Medical Education Directory. Famer FAIMER is thea Foundation for Advancement of the International Medical Education and Research.

外国培养的医生必须做的第一件事儿就是确保能够被有资格的医学院录取。这些医学院必须在国际医学教育和研究高级基金会的医学教育目录里。

If their school is not listed, then foreign-trained doctors can not be approved for a residency. One solution is to go back to medical school, --an American medical school.

如果他们的学校没在这个目录里，则这些外国培养的医生就不会被批准进行医师培训。解决办法之一就是重新回美国医学院学习。
