OPEC Ends Cairo Meeting with no Change in Oil Output (2/2)

OPEC members delayed a decision on whether to cut production again this year until December, giving them more time to assess previous attempts to halt a plunge in prices.

Britain to Host G-20 Summit in April (1/2)

Speaking in parliament, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown told lawmakers concerted action is crucial to stem the global financial crisis. And, he said, international leaders would be meeting in London to push that process forward.

Revising TV Ads To Relay Anti-Smoking Message



Anti-tobacco commercials have been around on television for decades. Their purpose is simple: to encourage people to quit smoking or not ever start.

Some of these ads, directed at young people, use disturbing images or play on their fears of contracting a tobacco-related disease.

House Rejects Emergency Financial Bill(2/3)

Emerging from a meeting with President Bush at the White House, Paulson said he was very disappointed after so much bipartisan work on the bill, saying the administration and Congress need to work as quickly as possible on a revised plan that can be implemented as soon as possible.

Shares have continued to fall in trading on the Asian markets, following the financial turmoil in Monday after the collapse of one of America's most prestigious investment banks Lehman Brothers. The Shanghai market saw a fall of around 4% at the end of morning trading. Hong Kong was down by around 6%, a figure repeated in South Korea. In Tokyo, shares fell by just over 5%, from where Chris Hogg reports.

It's not yet clear how much Japanese banks and insurance companies are owned by Lehman's, that uncertainty has hit the share prices hard. Lehman's Japanese unit filed for bankruptcy when the courts opened in Tokyo on Tuesday morning. It's liabilities weren't set out in detail, but one estimate puts the figure at more than $37,000,000,000, which if confirmed will make it Japan's second biggest bankruptcy ever. Shares also fell here and across Asia because of concerns about how the continuing problems in the US economy will affect the demand for exports from this part of the world.

Production has been halted at the world's largest aircraft manufacturer Boeing after 27,000 workers went on strike over a pay dispute. Their trade union is demanding greater job security of the benefits and commitment from Boeing that it will stop outsourcing jobs. Ulyan Boner reports.

The strike could have huge implications for the planemaker. Analysts say it could cost Boeing more than $100,000,000 per day in loss revenues. The company said it would not attempt to assemble any new planes during the strike, putting on hold the production of 4 different types of aircraft. Further delays in the production of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner are also expected. No new talks are scheduled and both sides say they are now waiting for the other to make the next move.

Pakistan has elected Asif Ali Zardari as its new president. He is the widower of the late Benazir Bhutto, whose assassination last December catapulted him to the center of political power. He polled 459 votes out of 702 Electoral College votes. From Islamabad, Barbara Plett reports.

Many people don’t trust him, even though he has never been convicted. His challenge the weeks ahead will be to convince him that he is indeed the man to lead Pakistan through one of its most turbulent periods.
