Scientists Discover Milky Way's Youngest Exploding Star(1/2)
Astronomers using
nesestrandra NASA's Candra X-ray observatory and the very large
a ray Array raido telescople in New Mexico have discovered the remains of a supernova known as "G1.9"
point one nine, which must have lit up our galaxy with the
prite bright flash of light about 140 years ago.
Alanasa At a NASA news conference Wednesday, scientists said they were able to estimate the age of supernovae by tracking its
remnent's ray rate of expansion over the last twenty years. They say it expanded by 16 percent, a surprisingly large amount, indicating it is much younger than previously thought.
The scientists
to who led this study, Stephen Reynolds of North Carolina State University, said radio and X-ray technology allow scientists to track the dying star
to through a dense
fuel field of gas and dust that had previously obscured
of the view.
The second most recent supernova is believed to have occured around 1680. Ever since astronomers discovered that supernova more than
15 50 years ago they have been searching for more missing supernovae and their remnents. R explains that scientists have measured the rates of exploding stars and other galaxies and found out that
their our own
Milky Way galaxy seems to be lagging behind in the number of supernovae per century.
