Shares have continued to fall in trading on the Asian markets, following the financial turmoil in Monday after the collapse of one of America's most prestigious investment banks Lehman Brothers. The Shanghai market saw a fall of around 4% at the end of morning trading. Hong Kong was down by around 6%, a figure repeated in South Korea. In Tokyo, shares fell by just over 5%, from where Chris Hogg reports.

It's not yet clear how much Japanese banks and insurance companies are owned by Lehman's, that uncertainty has hit the share prices hard. Lehman's Japanese unit filed for bankruptcy when the courts opened in Tokyo on Tuesday morning. It's liabilities weren't set out in detail, but one estimate puts the figure at more than $37,000,000,000, which if confirmed will make it Japan's second biggest bankruptcy ever. Shares also fell here and across Asia because of concerns about how the continuing problems in the US economy will affect the demand for exports from this part of the world.

Production has been halted at the world's largest aircraft manufacturer Boeing after 27,000 workers went on strike over a pay dispute. Their trade union is demanding greater job security of the benefits and commitment from Boeing that it will stop outsourcing jobs. Ulyan Boner reports.

The strike could have huge implications for the planemaker. Analysts say it could cost Boeing more than $100,000,000 per day in loss revenues. The company said it would not attempt to assemble any new planes during the strike, putting on hold the production of 4 different types of aircraft. Further delays in the production of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner are also expected. No new talks are scheduled and both sides say they are now waiting for the other to make the next move.

Share prices on Asian stock markets have fallen steeply. Earlier, the main index in New York, the Dow Jones Average closed at 3% down on Thursday, reacting to fresh signs of weakness in the US economy. The morning session in Hong Kong ended with the Hang Seng Index downed by just over 3%, to its lowest point in more than a year. In Japan, the Nikkei Index was down by almost 3% in midafternoon. Markets in mainland China fell by more than 2%.

The first woman to be appointed to governor general of Australia, Quentin Bryce, takes office today. The governor general is the representative of Queen Elisabeth in Australia. Ms. Bryce was governor of the state of Queensland, and one of its first female barristers. She's also been a federal sex discrimination commissioner and human rights advocate.

There’s been an attack on a convoy of vehicles used by the Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. Barbara Plett reports from Islamabad.

Later some officials said the Prime Minister wasn’t actually in the convoy at the time of the attack. That it was on its way to pick him up from the airport. Nevertheless, an apparent assassination attempt so close to the capital has alarmed the government which has launched a high-level inquiry.

Also in Pakistan reports say at least 15 people including civilians have been killed in an attack on a village by international forces based in nearby Afghanistan. Witnesses in South Waziristan say troops launched the assault after being dropped by helicopters.

In a separate development, the Election Commission in Thailand has found Mr. Samak's People Power Party guilty of electoral fraud and called for it to be dissolved. The commission ruled that the party had bought votes in national elections last December when they won the largest number of seats.

They'll have 12 months before they have to call the general election, but they'll face pressure to seek a new electoral mandate much sooner. The former Foreign Minister Taro Aso is already staking his claim to the job, telling reporters he has the qualifications to carry on when Mr. Fukuda left off.
