36 volunteers in South Africa will test the safety of an African-developed vaccine against H.I.V. The tests are the first step in human clinical trials of 2 vaccine candidates developed at the University of Cape Town.

These experimental AIDS vaccines are the first from Africa to reach testing in people. The National Institutes of Health in the United States provided assistance. Testing with 12 people began earlier this year in Boston, Massachusetts.

South Africa has more than 5,000,000 people infected with H.I.V., the largest number of any country.

South Africa launched the tests last week as the International AIDS Society held a conference in Cape Town. Other human trials of possible vaccines are taking place around the world. Scientists hope to get some results later this year.

But during last week's conference, experts reported the first decrease in international financing for AIDS vaccine research. They say funding dropped from about $930,000,000 in 2007 to 870,000,000 last year.

Also at the conference, scientists presented the latest findings about new mothers infected with H.I.V. 2 studies showed ways in which anti-H.I.V. drugs could permit infected women to breastfeed their newborns with less risk of passing the virus to them.

E-Books Hold Next Chapter for Book Industry (2/2)

And some Kindle users got a shock last week. They were surprised to find that copies of 2 books disappeared from their devices. These were 99-cent versions of George Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm."

Bloggers have had fun pointing out that "1984" is largely about censorship -- the suppression of information in a society led by Big Brother. Amazon explained that it did not have the rights to the books, so it erased them and returned the people's money.

This week, Barnes & Noble, the world's largest bookseller, launched what it calls the world's largest e-bookstore. People can read the books on the Apple iPhone and other handheld devices and personal computers. They can also download over a half million books available free from Google. The Internet search company is putting books online that are no longer protected by copyright.

But last October, Google reached a 125-million-dollar legal settlement to also make parts of some copyrighted books available. That deal with 2 groups of writers and publishers has raised competition issues. The Justice Department is now investigating. Also, the European Commission plans hearings in September on how European writers might be affected.

E-Books Hold Next Chapter for Book Industry (1/2)

The book industry is trying to get a good read on its future.

These days, instead of turning paper pages, many readers reach for handheld devices. These electronic readers not only store books to show on a screen, they can also read them out loud.

This month, Amazon lowered the price of its Kindle reader by $60 to just under $300. The device can download books wirelessly from a store on Amazon's Web site. Most new releases and bestsellers cost $9.99. Newspapers, magazines and other services are available for a monthly charge.

Buyers of e-books get a good deal: Traditional hardcover books often cost around $25. But what about book publishers and writers? Their concerns about profits are like the ones voiced as the Internet began to change the music industry. Many e-books are already selling for 99 cents.

Books printed on paper are easily shared and resold by anyone. But e-books can act more like computer software licensed only to the user who buys them.

 Researchers Take a Closer Look at Energy Drinks (1/2)

You could fill a store with all the energy drinks now available. They promise to make people feel more energetic and think more clearly. These products have names like Red Bull, Monster, Ripped Force, Speed Stack and 5-Hour Energy. They appeal mainly to young people and are fueled mainly by caffeine.

Chad Reissig at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, is a medical researcher who studies drug dependence. He says the team he works on get interested in studying energy drinks because of the explosion in their popularity in the last few years.

He says the researchers found 3 major things. 1: there are hundreds of brands of energy drinks in most major countries. 2: the drinks are not clearly labeled with enough information. And 3: the amount of caffeine varies greatly. Some contain as little as 50 milligrams, others as much as 500.

By comparison, a cup of Starbucks brewed coffee contains 330 milligrams in 473 milliliters. Some energy drinks contain a mixture of ingredients listed as an "energy blend." Ingredients like taurine, guarana and inositol are natural substances.

Researchers Take a Closer Look at Energy Drinks (2/2)

But Chad Reissig says scientists do not know a lot about them and how they interact with each other and caffeine. And worse, he says, there is no listing of the amount of each ingredient.

Some people combine energy drinks with alcohol. They think they can drink more alcohol that way and not be affected. Studies, however, suggest that they are still under the influence of the alcohol even if they do not feel that way.

Some makers of energy drinks do provide warnings. For example, a popular energy shot warns against use by people who are pregnant, nursing a baby or under the age of 12. Energy shots are small bottles of liquid. The directions also advise people to limit caffeine products and to drink only half the bottle if they want a moderate amount of energy.

The team at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine published a report in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. They suggested better labeling with the amount of caffeine and other ingredients clearly listed on the drink. The researchers are continuing to study energy drinks. They are currently seeking young people who have had a bad experience after drinking them.

In 2005, Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, began a program called "Degree in 3." Students take full loads of classes, including 2 or 3 summers.

Cindy Marini, assistant director of academic advising, says 28 programs currently offer a bachelor's degree in 3 years. These include business and nursing. As of March, about 50 of the 18,000 students at Ball State were taking part in the Degree in 3 program.

Students in the 3-year program at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, take more classes each semester than the other students. But the cost for a year is the same for all, more than $50,000.

Bryan McNulty, the communications director, says Bates has offered a 3-year bachelor's degree since the 1960s. But he says only one or 2 students usually choose it each year, and no one did in the graduating class in May.

Still, other schools are preparing their own programs. These include Hartwick College in New York State and the University of Houston-Victoria in Texas. And lawmakers in Rhode Island are considering a bill that would require state schools to offer the choice of a 3-year degree.

Out of Class Early: College in Three Years (1/2) ( 本次听写约191词 )

The last time the United States Education Department asked young people how long they took to finish college was in 2001. 57% graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 4 years. 39% took 5 years. And what about the others, the remaining 4%? They did it in 3 years. To some people, that is a smart idea.

In February, Senator Lamar Alexander warned higher education leaders that they risk rejection unless they lower the cost of attending college. The Republican senator is a former education secretary and former president of the University of Tennessee. He suggested offering a 3-year bachelor's degree that would save money as well as time.

Many students can already graduate in 3 years. They take bigger class loads and classes in the summer. And they have college credit from passing Advanced Placement tests in high school. A.P. credits can mean fewer required classes.

Others who want to graduate in 3 years must pay for the same education as 4-year students, but in a shorter period of time. 3-year graduates, though, can enter the job market sooner. That adds another year of wages to their lifetime earnings.

Biomarkers Show Little Help in Predicting Heart Disease (2/2)

"And in those cases having the biomarker which adds a little bit of information may be helpful in terms of decision making. But for the majority of patients, having the information of the biomarker probably wouldn't make a difference."

Doctor Wang hopes future research will discover biomarkers that are better able to predict the risk of cardiovascular disease. But for now, he says, doctors should depend on traditional risk factors. These include a history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tobacco use, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity or poor nutrition.

A separate study found no support for a theory that a biomarker called C-reactive protein causes heart disease. Earlier research suggested that the more of the protein in people's blood, the more likely they are to develop heart disease. The new study confirmed a link, but did not find evidence that the C-reactive protein causes the disease.

Both studies appeared in the July first issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The World Health Organization estimates that cardiovascular disease killed 17,500,000 people in 2005. That was 30% of all deaths. 8 out of 10 happened in low and middle income countries. At current growth rates, the W.H.O. expects the number to reach 20,000,000 by 2015.

Biomarkers Show Little Help in Predicting Heart Disease (1/2)

Cardiovascular disease is the world's leading cause of death. It includes heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure. Over the years, researchers have identified several substances in the blood that can serve as what they call cardiac biomarkers. These are used to measure the presence and development of cardiovascular disease.

Researchers have increasingly tried to use these biomarkers to identify people who are at high risk of developing heart disease. But a new study has found that they offer little help in this way.

A team from Massachusetts General Hospital and Sweden's Lund University studied how effective the biomarkers are as predictors. Thomas Wang at the Mass General Heart Center was the senior author of the study. "What we found is that, in fact, even after measuring those additional biomarkers that there wasn't a great deal of benefit in terms of understanding who was more likely to develop heart disease."

Doctor Wang says they did identify some combinations of biomarkers that improved predictions of heart attacks and strokes. But, he says, there is not enough evidence to justify measuring these in everybody. "It's still possible that in certain patients, measuring these biomarkers would be helpful. There are some patients for whom physicians are really on the fence about whether to give one therapy or another."
