Dear Ming Yan,

We have recommended your admission to the First Professional Master of Architecture degree program for Fall 2008.  Our recommendation will be forwarded to the Graduate and International Admissions Center for final approval, and you will soon receive official notification from that office as well as a letter from the School of Architecture.

We would like to congratulate you on your acceptance; obviously your application stood out among the other submissions. You will find excellent and comprehensive educational opportunities here, along with a diverse and well-motivated group of faculty and students.  We look forward to meeting and working with you.

If you have further questions or need additional information about our program, please contact me or Professor Richard Cleary (cleary@mail.utexas.edu). We always welcome visits to the School by prospective students, and this year we are hosting an Open House on Friday, April 4th. This event will give you many opportunities to interact with faculty and current students (see attached flyer). If you are unable to visit on that particular day, feel free to email me or Dr. Cleary about visiting on a different date.

In accordance with The Council of Graduate Schools, you should notify us of your intention to enroll no later than April 15, 2008.  However, an earlier response will permit us to monitor the admissions process for the benefit of all qualified applicants. Please send an email to me when you have made your decision. If you opt to attend another program, I would appreciate it if you could let me know where you plan to enroll (we use this information for statistical purposes).

This summer the School of Architecture will offer a course for incoming graduate students who would like an introduction to drawing (free-hand and hard-line), model building and shop work, and three-dimensional digital representation.  We encourage students without a degree in architecture or other substantial design background to take advantage of this opportunity to warm-up for the beginning of the school year.  The class will meet four hours a day, four days a week from Monday, 28 July, to Friday, 15 August (the first day of class for the fall semester is Wednesday 27 August).  This will be a 3-credit course offered on a pass/fail basis.  It will not count as part of any degree plan.  Enrollment will be limited to 20 students.  If you are interested in taking the course, please contact me by Tuesday, April 15th.

Also, if you are curious about Financial Aid, please read the information I have included below.

Sincerely,

Sarah Pitre

FINANCIAL AID

While I know that graduate study is expensive, unfortunately we have very few scholarships to address the real needs of our incoming graduate students.  You will be notified by March 20th if you have received a scholarship.

The bulk of our scholarships ($150,000) are awarded to continuing students, and you may apply for these in the beginning of the spring of ‘09.  The forms will be sent to you.  You may also apply at that time for teaching assistant positions, which provide $4,000 in salary, $3,258 in tuition assistance and qualify you for resident tuition and medical insurance during the teaching semester.  We only award teaching positions to continuing students but we limit the number of long term semesters that one can be a TA to three in order to spread the opportunity.  It is satisfying work and an important addition to your professional resume.  Both scholarships and TA positions are awarded on a competitive basis.

We are working to establish more scholarships for students; three new ones have been started this year.  In the meantime please contact the University Financial Aid office at (512) 475-6200 or visit their website at:
