The BBC is found that an internal United Nations inquiry to allegations of gold trafficking by Pakistani peacekeepers may have been blocked for political reasons. The UN’s investigation has uncovered evidence that certain Pakistani peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo supplied arms to militia groups in return for gold. But the investigation which began in early 2006 has so far produced no results. The head of the United Nations in Congo, William Swing, said if the allegations were substantiated discipline reaction would be taken against those concerned. A spokesman from human rights watch, **, said the UN had to clean up its ** to ** carries out investigations.
“Gold has in one of the major issues that has driven the conflict, in especially northeastern Congo. And Pakistani peacekeepers or any others becoming involved in the illegal trade will not only undermine the UN but it will undermine conflict resolution effort.”
The BBC is also put the accusations to Pakistan but it had no response.
