World Bank Revises 2009 Forecast for China
The World Bank has lowered its forecast for China's economic growth for 2009, but says the world's third-largest economy has the ability to weather the global economic slowdown.
In its quarterly economic update released Wednesday, the bank says China's economy will grow 6.5 percent this year, down from the 7.5 percent it forecast in November. The bank says it revised its forecast because of falling demand for Chinese exports.
Last week, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called on China to do whatever is necessary to meet the government's eight-percent growth target.
The report says China's economy will be able to withstand the crisis because its banks have been unaffected by the global credit crunch. But it urges Beijing to shift the economy's focus from capital investment towards domestic consumption.
Fed Ponders Strategy to Unfreeze Credit
Top officials of the U.S. Federal Reserve (central bank) are meeting Wednesday to consider more ways to boost the struggling U.S. economy. Some economists speculate that effort will include a program of buying long-term U.S. Treasury bonds, intended to ease borrowing costs for consumers and businesses. The credit market is a key to economic growth, but it stalled when the U.S. housing market collapsed.
Officials have some new data to consider as a report Wednesday shows U.S. consumer prices rose at the fastest rate since last July. February's four-tenths of a percent increase was driven by higher prices for gasoline and clothing.
2008 is an important year for China. All the Chinese people experienced anger, grief, excitement and pride.
In April, we jointly boycotted Carefour Mart in China as a response to French intentional tolerance of interferrence of Olympic torch relay.
In May, all the Chinese were buried in grief for the great tragedy in Wenchuan, where around 80,000 lost their lives suddently. However, we worked together and successfully combated the unprecedented disaster.
In August, we held the Olypic Games, a unique or uncomparable games. All the Chinese were proud of it as it marked China's return to the world stage. We showed ourselves to the whole world in a perfect manner.
In Dec., we sent three warships to Somali water area to protect Chinese commercial ships,of course, including Taiwan, Hongkong and Macau. Foreign media says China is showing its power now.
That's a summary of 2008.

http://www.kouyitianxia.cn/bbs.php
http://www.kouyitianxia.cn/forum-14-1.html
http://www.kouyitianxia.cn/bbs.php
http://jackyhuang1112.blog.hexun.com/9133481_d.html
http://www.kouyitianxia.cn/bbs.php

Will you be sending a card to the one you love?

| Chocolates and roses - traditional gifts for a loved one |
In many countries around the world, people in love are gearing up for Valentine's Day, a festival to celebrate romantic love.
In the UK, 14th February is usually celebrated by sending or giving Valentine's cards, and sometimes gifts. The day is celebrated by people already in a committed relationship, but also by people who want to tell someone they have feelings for them.
Traditionally, people may send an anonymous card or gift if they are holding a torch for someone who doesn't know it, to make a declaration of love. Though it's very flattering to receive an anonymous card, it could be frustrating if you have no idea who your secret admirer is, and you are looking for a relationship!
The word 'Valentine' was originally the name of a saint. Now, you can say that you're sending someone 'a Valentine', or sometimes, 'Valentine' can mean the person who is sending or receiving the card. Some people sign a card 'from your Valentine', and some ask the recipient to 'be my Valentine'.
As well as cards, many other tokens of love are exchanged on Valentine's Day. Flowers are one of the most common gifts to give, with red roses being seen as the most traditionally romantic flowers.
However, in these days of eco-awareness some people are rejecting hot-house flowers such as roses, for seasonal flowers native to Britain, for example snowdrops, which grow naturally in Britain in February. This is because of the high carbon footprint of imported or hot house flowers, and the chemicals used.
Other gifts which are common include jewellery and chocolates, but some people are even more extravagant, splashing out on a trip abroad or spa pampering day for their loved one. But some people would insist 'it's the thought that counts', and appreciate a handmade card and gift, such as home-made heart-shaped cookies more than an expensive one.

| The traditional dragon dance leads the New Year parade |
This week, London will be full of celebrations to welcome the Year of the Rat. Every year, London's Chinatown holds a spectacular event to celebrate Chinese New Year, the largest event outside of Asia.
This year in the UK, there seems to be a huge amount of interest in Chinese culture. For the third year running, the 'China in London' season is being held. This extended event will run from February to April, culminating in the Olympic torch relay, when the Olympic flame will pass through London on its way to the start of the Beijing Games.
The 'China in London' season will incorporate a huge number of events, ranging from art exhibitions to modern dance, film festivals to tea tastings, musical concerts to children’s half-term activities. In addition, another Chinese culture festival, 'China Now' is launching at Chinese New Year.
This is a nationwide season of events leading up to the Beijing Olympics. As well as cultural events, this programme includes an education programme for schools to develop relationships with China, and a Football Exchange, where the UK Football Association will be coaching children in China and offering a lucky few the chance to visit Britain on a football tour.
The main Chinese New Year celebration will be held on Sunday 10th February, and is expected to attract around 300,000 visitors. It will showcase both traditional and contemporary Chinese arts, bringing together British-born and Chinese performers.
The linchpin of the day is the grand parade through the streets of London, led by a traditional dragon dance, flanked by musicians, acrobats, artists and children. There will be a large stage and screen in Trafalgar Square featuring martial arts, music and dance.
It wouldn't be Chinese New Year without fireworks and firecrackers, so Leicester Square will see displays on the hour all afternoon. Nearby theatres and arts centres will also be holding special New Year events, such as variety shows.
Happy New Year to you, we hope you enjoy your celebrations as much as we will enjoy them in London.

China's sexual great leap forward
Lijia Zhang
Sunday November 4, 2007
The Observer
'Scored yet?' That was the first question from several young adventurers crowded around a table at a bar in Lhasa, Tibet's colourful capital city. Between sips of yak butter tea, they trade jokes and swap tales about their latest sexual encounters. These twentysomethings on leave from city jobs could have been from anywhere in the world looking for spiritual enlightenment, romantic encounters, or both. But they were all from China, where such conversations and attitudes would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
'Why not?' said Sandy Li, a 28-year-old fashion designer from Beijing, lighting a cigarette from a candle and confessing that she took the trip to meet someone with no strings attached. 'Just for a bit of harmless fun. We don't have to behave ourselves here; we don't know anyone. Finding a proper boyfriend is a lot harder than finding a man you can go to bed with.'
Li's attitude is typical of many of the young urban middle class, whose slogan could well be carpe diem (及时行乐)or rather carpe noctem. Apart from Lhasa, another popular pick-up place is Lijiang, in Yunnan province.
Of course, people don't have to travel tofar-flung (遥远的)places for casual sex. Your own flat would do. Less than 20 years ago, singles had little choice but to stay with their parents. Now cohabitation(同居), like sex before marriage, is commonplace.
Before a split(?何意?不懂) six months ago, Li lived with her photographer boyfriend for three years but had never introduced him to her family. 'For my parents, bringing a boyfriend home means impending marriage(带男友回家就意味着很快会结婚). I am still young. I'd like to make a splash in my career first, and explore what life can offer.'
'The singles are not talking about marriages, and lovers aren't talking about the future,' goes one popular saying among colleague students. And a joke describes the pattern of 'one-week' relationships: 'On Monday, you send out vibes. Tuesday, you express true desire. Wednesday, you hold hands. Thursday, you sleep together. Friday, a feeling of distance sets in. Saturday, you want out. On Sunday, you start searching again.'
Youngsters' unwillingness to settle down is causing great anxiety to the older generation. In Zhongshan Park,a stone's throw from the Forbidden City in Beijing, dozens of parents, armed with photographs and information about their children, gather and search for potential partners. Some even go 'eight-minute speed dating' on behalf of children who themselves will be chatting and flirting on the internet.
'Today's young people are probably more sexually charged than their parents' generation,' said Susie Huang, author of All About Susie, a collection of essays about the love and sex lives of today's burgeoning bourgeois. It's China's literary version of Sex and the City. 'To start with, it's now safe to be naughty,' she said. 'Before you might have landed in a labour camp for conducting an extramarital affair.'
But is it safe? A more tolerant social environment has led many to experiment in uncharted waters, with mixed results. Divorce rates are climbing steadily in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, where one in three marriages ends in failure. Syphilis has skyrocketed, with a 25-fold increase since the early 1990s. And extra-marital affairs are now common.
Maybe Muzi Mei, a former sex blogger, is an extreme example of today's restless and hedonistic crowds. Her site used to attract 10 million visitors a day before it was shut down by the government in 2003. Officials objected to her online diary, which explicitly detailed her exploits. She was forced to resign from her Guangzhou-based magazine as a sex columnist and now works for a website, but still continues her man-hopping ways.
'My sex life is very interesting. Some may find it educational as well as entertaining,' said the 29-year-old journalist over a bowl of steaming soup in a Beijing restaurant. 'I sleep with lots of men because I don't want to be imprisoned in one relationship,' she declared to the giggles of eavesdropping waitresses(偷听eavesdrop). 'I am a free spirit.'
She is also a romantic. In her magazine she offered tips on creating the right environment on a date and suggested playing your favourite music while making love. There are books available too, offering step-by-step guides to dating, from basic advice such as not spitting to sending flowers on Valentine's Day. Kissing, something the Chinese people once saw only in foreign films, is now part of the landscape.
A recent cover story in the national News Weekly concluded that 'China's love life is in a stage of revelry, featuring the emphasis on sex rather than love; on physical pleasure rather than spiritual fulfilment'.
Susie Huang thinks she knows why: 'It is a globalisation of some sort: China is becoming more westernised. And, in some ways, more human.'

“请”字表示“叫、唤”的意思时,可译为动词短语; send for, call in, go for。
He called in a mediator to settle the dispute.
Shall I go for a doctor?
They sent for a doctor at once, but he hasn't arrived yet.
1. two-faced
How could he be so two-faced?
2. run with the hare and hunt with the hounds
片语 run with the hare and hunt with the hounds或者hold with the hare and run with the hounds,字面意思是“跟着兔子跑,跟着狗打猎”,相当于汉语中的“两面讨好,不得罪任何一方的做法”。 I know how to handle two-faced people and can even tell at the first glance who is in the habit of running with the hare and hunting with the hounds.
Don't try to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds!
3. The vicar of Bray
The vicar of Bray Let who will be king, I will be vicar of Bray still.
“请”字有“请客”、“做东”的意思时,可译作动词短语;stand treat或stand one’s hand, stand somebody a dinner/a drink, etc;也可译作动词treat, entertain, regale。
We’ll go to the theatre, and I’ll stand treat.
Let me stand you a dinner.
She entertains a great deal.
The host regaled the honored guests with a feast.

Devastation across Britain
 |
|
| A fallen tree crushes a car in London |
On 16th October 1987, southern Britain was hit by hurricane force winds, the worst storm to occur in Britain since 1703.
Twenty years on, Britain is remembering the devastation caused by what came to be known as 'The Great Storm.' 15 million trees across the region were uprooted due to the wind, as well as the fact that a wet autumn in general had made the ground very muddy.
The falling trees caused destruction to buildings and vehicles and blocked roads and railway lines, causing everyone from commuters to school-children to stay at home.
There were also black-outs across the area, as power lines were damaged by falling trees and flying debris. People resorted to candles and torches for light, and gas stoves and open fires to cook food.
The storm raged for 4 hours before dawn, and claimed 18 lives. The effects of the bad weather were heightened by the fact that most people were completely unprepared, because the weather forecasters were caught out.
Earlier that week, weather forecasts had predicted severe weather. But forecasters thought it would miss Britain, and only affect the English Channel. A weatherman, Michael Fish is infamous for saying the storm wouldn’t happen, though in fact he was talking about a hurricane in Florida at the time.
The freak storm caused damage of more than £1billion pounds (15 billion RMB), and hundreds of people sustained injuries.
But could the same thing happen today in Britain? Well, as a result of climate change many people think that sudden and severe weather changes are more likely. However, meteorological technology has improved, and now uses satellites to get a much more accurate picture of future weather. So if another Great Storm comes along, the British public should be better warned and prepared!

Thank you for contacting us. Thank you for your prompt reply. 如果回复并不及时,只要将“prompt”除去即可,你还可以说,“Thank you for getting back to me.” Thank you for providing the requested information. Thank you for your assistance. 如果你想对他们表示特别的感激,就用这个句子,“I truly appreciate your help in resolving the problem.” Thank you for raising your concerns. 同时,你也可以使用,“Thank you for your feedback.” Thank you for your kind cooperation. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Thank you for your understanding. Thank you for your consideration. Thank you again for everything you've done.
1.Other questions will be discussed briefly. 2.In other words mineral substances which are found on earth must be extracted by digging, boring holes, artificial explosions, or similar operations which make them available to us. 3.Nuclear power's danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation. 1.It could be argued that the radio performs this service as well, but on television everything is much more living, much more real. 2.Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events, allows one to follow the latest developments in science and politics, and offers an endless series of programmes which are both instructive and entertaining. 3.It is generally accepted that the experiences of the child in his first years largely determine his character and later personality. 另外, 下列的结构也可以通过这一手段翻译: It is asserted that … It is believed that … It is generally considered that … It is well known that … It will be said … It was told that … 1.A right kind of fuel is needed for an atomic reactor. 2.By the end of the war, 800 people had been saved by the organization, but at a cost of 200 Belgian and French lives. 3.And it is imagined by many that the operations of the common mind can be by no means compared with these processes, and that they have to be acquired by a sort of special training. 1.Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially the dreadful consequences of taking up the habit. 2.By this procedure, different honeys have been found to vary widely in the sensitivity of their inhibit to heat. 4.Many strange new means of transport have been developed in our century, the strangest of them being perhaps the hovercraft. 5.New source of energy must be found, and this will take time…. It is reported that … It is said that … It is supposed that … It may be said without fear of exaggeration that … It must be admitted that … It must be pointed out that … It will be seen from this that … 1.The decision to attack was not taken lightly. 2.On the whole such an conclusion can be drawn with a certain degree of confidence, but only if the child can be assumed to have had the same attitude towards the test as the other with whom he is being compared, and only if he was not punished by lack of relevant information which they possessed. 1.Early fires on the earth were certainly caused by nature, not by Man. 2.These signals are produced by colliding stars or nuclear reactions in outer space. 3.Natural light or “white” light is actually made up of many colours. 4.The behaviour of a fluid flowing through a pipe is affected by a number of factors, including the viscosity of the fluid and the speed at which it is pumped. 5.They may have been a source of part of the atmosphere of the terrestrial planets, and they are believed to have been the planetesimal-like building blocks for some of the outer planets and their satellites. 6.Over the years, tools and technology themselves as a source of fundamental innovation have largely been ignored by historians and philosophers of science. 7.Whether the Government should increase the financing of pure science at the expense of technology or vice versa (反之) often depends on the issue of which is seen as the driving force. 8.The supply of oil can be shut off unexpectedly at any time, and in any case, the oil wells will all run dry in thirty years or so at the present rate of use.
1. These goods are in short supply. 2. This equation is far from being complicated. 1. It was as pleasant a day as I have ever spent. 2. It is easy to compress a gas. 1. She spoke in a high voice. 2. This engine develops a high torque. 1. You are ignorant of the duties you undertake in marrying. 2. Such criticisms have become familiar in his later commentaries on America. 3. He is truly sorry for his past, and he has undertaken to give up motorcars entirely and for ever.
1. I am going to be good and sweet and kind to every body. 2. He asked me for a full account of myself and family. 3. Another war will be the absolute end of our country.

1. 人山人海:在诗词用语(poetic expression)里,老外也有使用:“a (the) sea of faces”,颇有咱的“人山人海”的味道。例如:Looking out upon the sea of faces, Mr. A delivered a touching speech.(望着一片人山人海的听众,A先生发表一篇动人的演说。)Standing at his podium, President Clinton saw a sea of faces waving at him.(克林顿总统站在讲台上看到人山人海的人群挥手向他致意。)。 因此,可以说:“I saw a sea of faces from the top of the building. ”但在平地的人群中,就不说:“I saw the sea of faces.”也不说:“There is a sea of faces.”只说:“I saw a large crowd of people.”
不过老外最常的说法是:“Many families have skeletons in the closet.(许多家庭的衣柜里都有骨骸,骨骸就是指家丑。)”;或者说:“Every family has its own source of shame.(每个家庭都有自己的丑事)”;说白些,就是:“Every family has its own problem.”
3、天下无不散的宴席:有人直译为:“There are no feasts in the world which do not break up at last.” 如果按照美语说法,也许更易理解:“All good things come to an end.(意思是:所有好的事情,总有结束的一天。)”;假如是指好友最后也有分别的一天,那么可以说:“Eventually, all bosom friends will drift apart.(bosom friend是指知心的好友)”
4、平时不烧香,临时抱佛脚:有人照字直译为:“When times are easy, we do not burn the incense, but when the trouble comes, we embrace the feet of the uddha.” 美语里一般说法是:“Worship God every day; not just in times of adversity.(要每天敬拜神,不是只在困难时。)”;对学生也可以说:“If you study hard every day, exams will not seem overwhelming.(如果你每天用功,考试就不会形成压力。)”
5、挂羊头,卖狗肉:有人照字直译为:“He advertises mutton, but sells dog's flesh.”或“He hangs up a sheep's head at the shopfront and sells dog meat.” ,“Bait-and-switch”当名词用,也可不用连字号“This store uses bait and switch policy.”或者简单的说:“Let the buyer be aware!(让消费者提高警觉)”或“Say one thing and do another.”
6、一言既出,驷马难追:有人译成:“One word lets slip and four horses will fail to catch it. 或 A statement that once let loose cannot be caught by four galloping horses.” 不过他们倒有类似的说法:“A word once let go cannot be recalled.”或者说:“ You can not take back what you have said.(你说出的话,就不能再收回来。)”
7、祸从口出,言多必失:有人译为:“The mouth is the gate of misfortune and evil.” 最好说成:“Careless talk leads to trouble.(不小心说话,会带来麻烦)或“The less said the better.(说的愈少愈好)”甚至也可以说:“Shut the mouth and open the eyes.(闭嘴少说,张眼多看。)”

United Nations Marks International Women's Day The United Nations is marking International Women's Day with calls for countries to do more to end rape, killings and other violence against women, especially during armed conflicts.
Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Director of the U.N. Development Fund for Women, issued a statement Thursday saying that rape is used as a weapon of war. The organization says the violence that women experience in times of peace intensifies greatly during conflict, as legal and social systems break down.
The U.N. agency said that while 104 out of 192 U.N. member states make marital rape a crime, the laws are poorly enforced.
On Wednesday, the U.N. Security Council called for sexual and violent acts against women and children during armed conflict to be regarded as war crimes.
