<P>This is the 20th annual Martin Lurther King holiday in the United States. And it's the first since the passing of Rosa Parks, often called the mother of the civil rights movement. </P>

<P>Organic food products <STRONG>generate</STRONG> 14.5 billion dollars <STRONG>in annual sales</STRONG> in the United States. That <STRONG>represent</STRONG>s two percent of total food and beverage sales. </P>

<P>David Gagnon is with the Organic Trade Association.</P>

And according to the organic trade associations, manufacturer's market survey, we are estimating that we gonna see about 18% growth per year <STRONG>[up] to the year</STRONG> 2008."</P>

<P>Harjit Kelley is a retired commander with the Kenyan [navy] who is a consultant for the United Nations monitering group [in-on] Somalia. </P>

<P>He estimates that pirates have collected [wealth-<STRONG>well] over</STRONG> 1 million dollars ransom during the past few months and, says that factional leaders are <STRONG>coordinating the efforts</STRONG>. </P>

<P>Commander Kelley describes to VOA one transaction that took place in April in Kenya's port city of Mombasa to rescue a merchant vessel called Feisty Gas. </P>

A local shipping agent [went through-<STRONG>withdrew] the money in three installments</STRONG>, he says, and in different times and locations in Mombasa <STRONG>hand</STRONG>ed the money <STRONG>over</STRONG> to a man who appeared to be Somali. </P>

<P>Piracy has been taking place off the coast of Somalia for at least a decade, with several incidents reported each year, but it's unclear why there has been such <STRONG>a dramatic increase</STRONG> since the beginning of the year.</P>

<P>Captain Sellathurai Mahalingam <STRONG>can still recall</STRONG> the terror he felt on the evening of June 25th, as he [sell-sailed] the M.V.[Semlow] with 850 tons of world food program relief food to <STRONG>a destination in</STRONG> Somalia. </P>

<P>On the line to VOA from his office in Sri Lanka, the captain describes the beginning of what became a more than 3 month <STRONG>Odyssey</STRONG>. </P>

<P>The <STRONG>hi-jacker</STRONG>s also demanded that the boat's Mombasa-based agent [Motaku] Shipping Agency pay 500,000 dollars for the release of the ship and crew. Director&nbsp;[Karim Kudrati]&nbsp;tells VOA his company <STRONG>paid a ransom</STRONG> but would not disclose the exact amount <STRONG>for security reasons</STRONG>. </P>

<P>The attack on the M.V. semlow is one of at least 28 piracy incidents that have occured [of-<STRONG>off</STRONG>] Somalia's <STRONG>coast</STRONG> since march of this year, according to the International [marine time-Maritime] Bureau, with many company's paying ransom to get their ships, crews and cargos back safely.</P>
