Scientists are looking at materials on the scale of atoms to shrink computer circuits of the future.

Paolo Gargini is Director of Technology Strategy with Intel. He told Earth & Sky you can compare the memory cell of yesterday’s computer to the size of a football field, with thousands of people, representing electrons, standing in the middle.

But today’s memory cell is closer to the size of a basketball court, occupied by about 100 people. Quantum computing – the computing of the future where individual atoms are used to store information – promises to make memory cells even smaller.

Can a single person, can an individual represent information?

Gargini said that scientists haven’t yet used the properties of atoms as a specific element to store information. But he said the progress so far makes him hopeful.

We can now manipulate something at the atomic level and, we can use that information like we are using now the thousands of electrons that are stored in one transistor or the adjacent one as the key element to make a computation and storage of memory.

总结
computer circuits 计算机电路
memory cell 存储单元
atomic level 原子级(10-10 m,对应纳米级nano level,10-9 m)
