The American business community Tuesday launched a far-reaching drive to win congressional approval for granting the President trade promotion authority (TPA), that used to be called fast-track authority. Congress begins its consideration on the measure this week. Trade promotion authority is considered an essential tool if the United States is to play a constructive role in a new round of global talks to ease trade barriers. The authority would make it impossible for protectionist lawmakers to amend any trade agreement negotiated by the government and submitted to Congress for approval.
