The Iraqi and American governments describe the killing of a militant leader Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi as a severe setback for his group Al-Qaeda in Iraq. President Bush said the killing and the American air attack on Wednesday was a chance for the Iraqi government to turn the tide against the insurgence. That message was reiterated by a high-ranking figure, the US state department, James Jeffery.
“We’ve been carrying out very successful operations against the Zarqawi network since 2004. But, there is nothing that can replace killing a leader of a movement like this. Because the Zarqawi part of insurgence is very top-down, other parts but very decentralized.”
Al-Qaeda in Iraq said it would fight on against the US-led forces and the Iraqi partners.
