Bamboo: Nature’s wonder plant

This Asian grass is gaining world-wide appreciation

The Chinese scholar Su Dongpo(苏东波 ) once wrote, “I can eat without meat, but I can’t live without bamboo.” He wasn’t alone in his devotion to this unique plant. People in many Asian cultures have praised bamboo for its beauty as well as its usefulness.

Particularly in Chinese tradition, bamboo has always held a special place of honor. It is said to symbolize integrity and serenity. And, down through the ages, its simple beauty has inspired artists and witers alike. Poetic writings about the plant date back as far as the third century.

The root to the shoot
traditionally, bamboo has been held in high esteem because of its practical uses. In ancient times, like today, all of the plant was put to use, in food, medicine and even weapons. Archaeological discoveries prove that during the fourth century in China over 200 commonly used items were made from bamboo.

A giant grass
Though some people think it’s a tree, bamboo is actually a fast-grwing grass. More than 1,200 grow worldwide. But China, by far, grows the most. More than 400 species are found there.

Bamboo is valued for its strength and hardness, yet lightness. These characteristics make it a perfect material for scaffolding, for making musical instruments and for many other uses.

A newfound popularity
Today, bamboo is no longer just an Asian favorite. Demand for bamboo furniture and flooring is now growing in the West. Consumers like the plant’s low cost and durability. Others appreciate its environmentally friendly qualities. While the average tree takes 60 years to grow, bamboo only takes six. As a renewable resource, this makes it an ideal choice for furniture and flooring.

The next time you walk past some bamboo, maybe you’ll stop to consider its usefulness. But even better, like the ancient poets, why not pause and receive inspiration from these gentle grasses swaying in the wind.
