We Chinese are familiar with some uncanny and funny English translations, such as “F**k Goods” for “干货”. More often than not, it is thought as a self-motivated and courageous stab to keep up with the globalization trend, a display of unguided folk wisdom that goes awry and lands in embarrassing spots. However, a new discovery has pushed this kind of niubility to a new level, as is demonstrated below:
For those who are unable to access the Wanfang database, type “开拓进取真抓实干不断开创西部大开发的新局面” into the search box of Baidu, and witness the eye-opener for yourselves (the second link). You won’t get many opportunities to see such nice translation for an academic publication. And how the hell did it get through the reviewing and editing process to see the light of day is a myth that stretches human imagination.^^*
