International leaders have been paying tribute to the former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, who has died of heart failure at the age of 76. He presided over the demise of the Soviet Union and Russia’s turbulent transition to democracy and capitalism. James Rogers reports from Moscow.

“Boris Yeltsin changed Russia forever. His death was announced from the Kremlin, the seat of power which he occupied as Russia’s first post-Soviet head of state. In a national television address, his successor President Vladimir Putin said that thanks to Mr. Yeltsin, a new democratic Russia had been born. Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, was both a fellow reformer and sometime political rival. In paying tribute to Mr. Yeltsin, he has spoken of major deeds for the good of the country as well as serious mistakes.”
