The second highest official in the United States Justice Department Paul McNulty has announced his resigning and made accusations that the Bush Administration fired eight federal prosecutors for political reasons. The White House and the Justice Department denied the accusations and say that the prosecutors were sacked for failing to do their jobs properly. James Westhead reports from Washington.

“The resignation of America’s second most senior law officer comes as his department is investigated by Congress for the controversial firing of eight US attorneys last December. Critics called for the Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign. In a letter, his deputy Paul McNulty said he was stepping down for family and financial reasons. However, Mr. McNulty has recently run into difficulty during testimony to Congress. He admitted one of the eight attorneys was fired to make way for a political appointee, contradicting his boss, who insists all the firings were based on performance not politics.”
