A science teacher from ~Prinevill, Oregon,~ in the pacific northwest is the new national teacher of the year.

Michael Geisen is 35 years old. He was a forester, but he decided he would rather work with growing minds that with growing trees. Seven years ago, he got a master's degree in teaching and a job at ~Crook~ county middle schoole. ~crook~ county has high rates of /powerty/poverty.

He brought new energy to the science department. He also created school projects to get parents involved in their children's work. One girl who was recently in his class said he /can/could probably make it interesting to watch grass grow.

During lunch, his students come to his room to talk, get help, visit his turtle and sometimes join him in playing guitar. He writes songs and developes games about science. He says one of his goals as a teacher is to create people who will continue to learn throughout their lives.

MG studied forest resource management and graduated with high honors from the university of Washington. He says he tries to be creative with each activity. He does not like to use textbooks much. When students know that the work is local and useful to their lives, he says, they start to get interested /in it/.

CPR guide lines from 2005 said only untrained people should use this method. Those with training were told to use traditional CPR. But now the American Heart  Association says everyone should use hands-only CPR /on last day/unless they feel strong about their ability to do rescue breathing.

The organization says the hands-only method was just as avtive as traditional CPR in several studies. Scientists say there /was/is enough oxygen remaining in a person's system for several mintues after breathing stopps. They also say people need less oxygen when the heart is at rest.

The American Heart Association recommends Hands-only CPR for use on adults who suddenly collapse. It says traditional CPR was a combination of breaths and compressions should be used for babies and children. Traditional CPR should also be used for adults who are found already unconscious and not breathing normally. And it should be used for any victims of drowning or collapse from breathing prolems.

These are all examples of cases where CPR with mouth to mouth breathing may be more helpful than hands-only CPR. The American Heart Association says because there are many such cases, people should still learn CPR that includes mouth to mouth.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR is help for a stopped heart. It increases the chances of survival and reduces the danger of brain damage. With traditional CPR, you push hard on the chest 30 times, then stop to give 2 breaths to force air into the lungs. You repeat the steps until to the victim can get medical treatment.

But people may worry about getting sick from blowing into a stranger's mouth.  Also the training is easy to forget, specially in a crisis. And those without training may be afraid to do anything for fear they would(will) do something wrong.

So now , the American heart association has simplified its guide lines and is calling for hand-only CPR. Here is how it works. A person has collapsed and is unconscious. The victim has lost color in the face and dosn't appear to be breathing. These are signs of cardiac arrest . And this is the time to begin the CPR.

Place your hands, one on the top of the other, on the center of the chest. Push hard and fast. Aim for a rate of about 100 presses in a minute. Chest compressions keep the blood flowing to the brain, heart, and other organs.

Wikis are websites designed for cooperative work. Users can easily create or change the content. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit it, is the best known wiki. A newer example is curriki, a curriculum wiki. Curriki.org is a learning community for developing and sharing educational materials for free. It says it has 40,000 members in 200 countries.

The materials are for kindergarten through grade 12. The subjet areas are mathematics, science, techology, reading, language arts and languages. In addition to english, there are some materials in French, German, Hindi, Portuguese~ and Spanish. A curriculum building tool helps educators create lesson plans on the site. The idea is for members to donate resources that represent best practices.

Curriki's partners include ~Sesame~ workshop which has created vadios and lesson plans to teach children about cultural differences. Another company, ~Atomic~ learning  has provided vadios for teaching about techology.

Members who donate materials are listed on the site. Comments /sent/and criticisms about materials are also posted /there/. Any one can use curriki.org to teach others or themselves. The materials can be printed or saved to a CD.
任何人都可以用curriki.org来教别人活着自学。

For many families, though, the most important thing colleges can do is show them the money. Lately, top schools with lots of money have increased the financial aid, putting pressure on other colleges to do the same.

Deciding how many students to accept can be difficult. It involves ~trying~ to predict the number of applicants who will decide to attend. Students may not like being put on waiting lists, but mistakes can be costly. Some colleges have /have/had to house new students in hotels, because a larger than expected number accepted admission offers.

This years, the ~weak~ /Academy/economy has admissions officers /nerves/nervous that some families may not be able to pay for college as planed. The recent problems that spread from the housing market to credit markets /are/have even affected students loans.

Colleges are also facing changes in the population. The education Department expects the number of high school graduates to start going down after this year. This will happen as the ~last~ of the children of the baby boom generation finish high school. The number is not expected to start rising again until 2015.

May 1st is an important date in the college admissions process in the United States. This is the last day for high school seniors to accept or reject offers of admission in the fall. Offers are sent by April 15th.

Acceptance rates at the top colleges were lower than ever this year. No surprise just more stress from  stories of top students getting rejection letters even from less competitive schools.

Numbers tell the story. The Education Department predicts that the number of high school graduates in the united States will reach the highest level ever this year. 3330000 students are expected to graduate.

But not only are their(there) more college applications(applicants) these days, they are also applying to more colleges. On line and common applications make the process easier. It can mean several acceptance to choose from. It also means more work for colleges to get the students they accept to accept them.

Many colleges and Universities hold visiting days that offer a chance to attain(attend) classes and stay overnight, sort of test drive. Some school send gifts. At least one college has its international  students write letters in the Native languages of accepted applications(applicants).
