World News. BBC News with Jonathan Izzard. The World Bank has endorsed the a call by its president Robert Zoellick for international action to deal with the effects of rapidly rising food prices. Mr. Zoellick unveiled what he called a new deal for poorer countries, which includes doubling the value of loans made to African farmers by next year. But there was also a controversy about the contribution that bio-fuels may have made to the problem. From Washington, here’s our economics correspondent Andrew Walker. Against the background of food riots in many countries, the World Bank Chief presentsed proposals for what he calls a new deal for global food policy. For the Bank itself, that means doubling its loans for agriculture in Africa, and providing more funds to help einsure young children get basic nutrition. Bio-fuels were a controversial element of thethat they debate. World Bank economists say they have contributed to the rising prices. The Indian Finance Minister said that in a world where there’s poverty and hunger, there is no justification for diverting food crops towards bio-fuels.
