Dictation Public transport workers in France are staging a nationwide strike today to protest against proposed pension reforms. Some flights and train services could be disrupted, but new laws brought in by President Sarkozy mean workers have to provide a basic service. From Paris, here’s Anna Jean Kurby. Unions have demanded this day of action to protest against government plans to trim their pension benefits. Under the proposals, public sector workers like train drivers would have to work longer before they could retire on full pensions. In recent weeks, the government has fpaced a series of demonstrations across the country. Fishermen have been blockading ports and oil deports in protest to the soaring cost of fuel. Illegal immigrantes have launched strikes to get work permits, and teachers and students have held numerous marches against planned cuts in education. |
