BBC News with Michael Pauls. A newly elected special assembly in Nepal is poised to abolish the country’s centuries-old monarchy and declare the nation a republic. The formal swaying sweeping away of the monarchy will be part of the a peace process, which is has included the elections of the aboard the part ofthat have brought to power the country’s monished Maoist former-rebels rivals. They’ve been implicitly implacably opposed to King Gyanendra. Charles Haviland is in their assembly in K.

 

The stage is set. There’re cordons/ of police, some with body armor and shieldcheels, and rain of riserwherea ring of razor wire  in closingenclosing this complex. Crowds with balloons preparing to celebrate and shouting anti-King’s slogans are being kept some distance away. The keen key vote has been postponed for a few hours. A senior politician told the BBC top party leaders are trying to work out temporary arrangements for a head of state’s position. The politician said King Gyanendra is concerned about his own security and that he is likely to be given an autmiteve ultimatum of 15 days to leave the royal palace.
