Stock markets reflected the fate in the future of the economy. Share prices gained more than 1540% in 2007. Mumbai’s Sensex, index closed the year at over 20,000 points. The services and manufactormanufacturingy sector lead the growth. Confident Indian companies also began to move beyond to the domestic market. DT. K. Bhaumik, an economist at India’s biggest conglomerate reliance industries, says Indian companies invested nearly 50 billion dollars in acquiring companies overseas. “All these the big cooperatestend toare trying to expaend their global operations, be a global player, they think they’re confident competent enough operate globally, to there’s a lot of confidence.” But the optimism extinged is tinged with caution. There’re fares fears that there the rupee’s will be 15% appreciation against to the dollar in 2007, would could hurt the information technology sectors and reduce exports. And there’s little sign the economic boom is strictly trickling down to inboomlized impoverished villages in many parts of the country. It is estimated that more than one third of the country’s 1 billion people to still live on less than 2 dollars a day. There’re concerns that the raising disparity between booming cities and villages could trigger social discontent.
