"Of course we are really affected with the price increase of rice," says this customer, "how can we afford to buy that rice at 40 or 50 pesos per kilo when we don't even have a job?"
The high prices had already sparked protests in the Philippines, one of the world's biggest importers of rice, hoping to quell rising public anger. Philippine President Macapagal-Arroyo arranged to bring more shipments of rice from Vietnam and Thailand. The government has also cracked down on hoarding.
"So far I don't see any reason why the Philippines were worrying about the rice prices because as you can see we have sufficient(ly) stocks and loading from Thailand and Vietnam."
Despite government assurances the crises shows no sign of easing, and Vietnam crops were hit by a virus, hurting supplies, and leading this major exporter to slash exports by nearly a quarter. The government is trying to keep more rice inside the country. Aid agencies say the poor have already begun to suffer worldwide as agencies rushing supplies. There is now concern there could be unrest in countries across Asia and Africa as a high price of rice hits those with low incomes.

In Hong Kong, shoppers grabbed and carried as much rice as they could, the crises over rising price has hit nearly all over Asia from China to Thailand to the Philippines. In Manila, shoppers waited to buy rice, only to learn they are limited to 3 kilos per person, about 6.5 pounds at a price that's nearly doubled in 3 months.
Experts don't see any relief in sight, and if anything, expect the prices could double in the coming month for rice, stable in the diet of nearly half the world's population.
