Description of career project

When I graduated as an excellent student from the College of Materials Science and Engineering, Tongji University, the best Engineering school in China, I decided to examine different careers that might interest me. For, though I did very well in Chemical Engineering and could do equally well as an engineer, I knew I was not so interested in the area as to take it as my lifetime career. The future had more in store for me.

After graduation, I joined Shanghai Chang Ku Building Materials Co. ltd, a Taiwan-based international company mainly engaging in the production of construction material. It has 56 subsidiaries around the world and owns R&D center in Italy. In the first year, I worked as an assistant engineer and kept rotating between different departments. This experience has enabled me to utilize my technical and interpersonal skills in new and challenging ways. The position has also allowed me to interact with a multitude of departments including R&D sector, techniques department, production department and marketing department. In the second year, when my present boss, Mr. Cheng Yingxue came from Taiwan headquarter; recognizing my technical background and outstanding impersonal skills, he promoted me to the position of his assistant manager, mainly responsible for the coordination between different departments on the production lines. It was at this time that I discovered what I’m really interested in and designed the plan of development and growth for myself. I discovered that my talent lies in the strategic planning of a product line on the “macro” part, and in the subtle coordination between different departments and personnel on the “micro” part.

Globalization makes the world a village. We could hardly find a production purely made in one country. The manufacturing manager of the 21st century should have a global view and totally comprehend the cultural difference as well as understand the people’s consumptive hobbies and actions under different cultures.

Discrepancy often arises from the different responsibilities and different angles of view, between Product Engineering Department and other supporting departments. A good manufacturing manager should be capable to harmonize the engineers and other managers. When it comes to this, I find my knowledge and experience fall short. Upon my European colleagues’ recommendation and Mr. Marting’s encouragement, I choose to further my education in your university – GEM’s MLPS program, a program in engineering management that can help me achieve my short term goal of becoming an outstanding manufacturing manager in the manufacturing industry. Through your program, I can diversify my scientific and technological knowledge and secure a strong background in economics and management in an international context; I can also enhance my understanding in current situation and tendency of western manufacturing industry; more importantly I can add to my experience the diversity of multi-culture in cooperation with international staff.

My long-term career goal is to move into marketing and product management. I believe that attaining this MS degree is the cornerstone to achieving my goals, given China’s lack of talents in the area of management of logistics and production systems. It will give me the academic background necessary to succeed in product development, project management, and strategic planning. It will improve decision-making skills necessary for optimizing performance.

At present I desire to continue at Chang Ku Group, attending an E-learning program in accounting hosted by China People’s University that provides the necessity knowledge in finance and accounting. But I believe that your school-GEM is the best environment for me to achieve my goal for your outstanding program in project management. Such famous projects as both La Tour Eiffel and The Strait Tunnel are works of GEM graduates. I sincerely hope that I can have the honor of being a member in GEM and make similar contributions to China in the area of management of logistics and production systems. Thank you very much for your consideration!
