Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o’clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

【讲解】

“才一点”与“敲了十三下”构成并列句，用but连接。“看表”是伴随动作，用现在分词作状语表示。这里的“才”用before表示。我们习惯用not…until来表达“直到。。。。。。才”，后半句当然也可以译成“The bell didn’t stop until it struck thirteen times.”或者”It was not until the thirteenth stroke that the bell stopped.”我们还是多多体会一下before的用法吧！
