Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.
1.Frustrated with delays in Sacramento, Bay Area officials said Thursday they planned to take matters into their own hands to regulate the regions growing pile of electronic trash.
2.A San Jose councilwoman and a San Francisco supervisor said they would propose local initiatives aimed at controlling electronic waste if the California law-making body fails to act on two bills stalled in the Assembly. They are among a growing number of California cities and counties that have expressed the same intention.
3.Environmentalists and local governments are increasingly concerned about the toxic hazard posed by old electronic devices and the cost of safely recycling those products. An estimated 6 million televisions and computers are stocked in California homes, and an additional 6,000 to 7,000 computers become outdated every day. The machines contain high levels of lead and other hazardous substances, and are already banned from California landfills
4.Legislation by Senator Byron Sher would require consumers to pay a recycling fee of up to $30 on every new machine containing a cathode ( 阴极 ) ray tube. Used in almost all video monitors and televisions, those devices contain four to eight pounds of lead each. The fees would go toward setting up recycling programs, providing grants to non-profit agencies that reuse the tubes and rewarding manufacturers that encourage recycling.
5.A separate bill by Los Angeles-area Senator Gloria Romero would require high-tech manufacturers to develop programs to recycle so-called e-waste.
6.If passed, the measures would put California at the forefront of national efforts to manage the refuse of the electronic age.
7. But high-tech groups, including the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and the American Electronics Association, oppose the measures, arguing that fees of up to $30 will drive consumers to online, out-of-state retailers.
8."What really needs to occur is consumer education. Most consumers are unaware theyre not supposed to throw computers in the trash," said Roxanne Gould, vice president of government relations for the electronics association.
9.Computer recycling should be a local effort and part of residential waste collection programs, she added.
10.Recycling electronic waste is a dangerous and specialized matter, and environmentalists maintain the state must support recycling efforts and ensure that the job isnt contracted to unscrupulous ( 毫无顾忌的 ) junk dealers who send the toxic parts overseas.
11. "The graveyard of the high-tech revolution is ending up in rural China," said Ted Smith, director of the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. His group is pushing for an amendment to Shers bill that would prevent the export of e-waste.
26. What step were Bay Area officials going to take regarding e-waste disposal.'?
A) Exert pressure on manufacturers of electronic devices.
B) Lay down relevant local regulations themselves.
C) Lobby the lawmakers of the California Assembly.
D) Rally support to pass the stalled bills.
27. The two bills stalled in the California Assembly both concern ________.
A) regulations on dumping hazardous substances into landfills
B) the sale of used electronic devices to foreign countries
C) the funding of local initiatives to reuse electronic trash
D) the reprocessing of the huge amounts of electronic waste in the state
28. Consumers are not supposed to throw used computers in the trash because __.
A) they contain large amounts of harmful substances
B) this is banned by the California government
C) some parts may be recycled for use elsewhere
D) unscrupulous dealers will retrieve them for profit
29. High-tech groups believe that if an extra $30 is charged on every TV or computer purchased in California, consumers will _______.
A) abandon online shopping
B) buy them from other states
C) strongly protest against such a charge
D) hesitate to upgrade their computers
30. We learn from the passage that much of California's electronic waste has been _
A) collected by non-profit agencies
B) dumped into local landfills
C) exported to foreign countries
D) recycled by computer manufacturers

| COME ON GUYS! WHAT R U WAITING FOR?! |
Passage Four Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.
"Ive never met a human worth cloning," says cloning expert Mark Westhusin from his lab at Texas A&M University. "Its a stupid endeavor." That’s an interesting choice of adjective, coming from a man who has spent millions of dollars trying to clone a 13-year-old dog named Missy. So far, he and his team have not succeeded, though they have cloned two cows and expect to clone a cat soon.1)They just might succeed in cloning Missy this spring - or perhaps not for another 5 years. It seems the reproductive system of mans best friend is one of the mysteries of modern science.
Westhusin’s experience with cloning animals leaves him upset by all this talk of human cloning.2) In three years of work on the Missy project, using hundreds upon hundreds of dogs eggs, the A&M team has produced only a dozen or so embryos (胚胎) carrying Missys DNA. None have survived the transfer to a surrogate (代孕的) mother. The wastage of eggs and the many spontaneously aborted fetuses (胎) may be acceptable when you’re dealing with cats or bulls, he argues, but not with humans. "Cloning is incredibly inefficient, and also dangerous," he says.
Even so, dog cloning is a commercial opportunity, with a nice research payoff. Ever since Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1997, Westhusins phone has been ringing with people calling in hopes of duplicating their cats and dogs, cattle and horses. "A lot of people want to clone pets, especially if the price is right," says Westhusin. Cost is no obstacle for Missys mysterious billionaire owner; he’s put up $3.7 million so far to fund A&Ms research.
Contrary to some media reports, Missy is not dead. The owner wants a twin to carry on Missys fine qualities after she does die. The prototype is, by all accounts, athletic, good-natured and supersmart. Missys master does not expect an exact copy of her. He knows her clone may not have her temperament.3) In a statement of purpose, Missys owner and the A&M team say they are "both looking forward to studying the ways that her clones differ from Missy."
Besides cloning a great dog, the project may contribute insight into the old question of nature vs. nurture. It could also lead to the cloning of special rescue dogs and many endangered animals.
However, Westhusin is cautious about his work. He knows that even if he gets a dog pregnant, the offspring, should they survive, will face the problems shown at birth by other cloned animals: abnormalities like immature lungs and heart and weight problems~4) "Why would you ever want to clone humans," Westhusin asks, "when were not even close to getting it worked out in animals yet?"
36. By "stupid endeavor" (Line 2, Para. 1), Westhusin means to say that ________.
A) animal cloning is not worth the effort at all
B) animal cloning is absolutely impractical
C) human cloning should be done selectively
D) human cloning is a foolish undertaking
37. What does the first paragraph tell us about Westhusin's dog cloning project?
A) Its success is already in sight.
B) Its outcome remains uncertain.
C) It is doomed to utter failure.
D) It is progressing smoothly.
38. By cloning Missy, Mark Westhusin hopes to ________.
A) study the possibility of cloning humans
B) search for ways to modify its temperament
C) examine the reproductive system of the dog species
D) find out the differences between Missy and its clones
39. We learn from the passage that animal clones are likely to have ________.
A) a bad temper
B) immune deficiency
C) defective organs
D) an abnormal shape
40. It can be seen that present cloning techniques ________.
A) still have a long way to go before reaching maturity
B) have been widely used in saving endangered species
C) provide insight into the question of nature vs. nurture
D) have proved quite adequate for the cloning of humans

“Home, sweet home” is a phrase that expresses an
essential attitude in the United States. Whether the reality
of life in the family house is sweet or no sweet, the 1._______
cherished ideal of home has great importance for many
pople.
This ideal is a vital part of the American dream. This
dream, dramatized in the history of nineteenth-century
Eruopean settlers of the American West, was to find a
piece of place, build a house for one’s family, and 2.______
started a farm. These small households were portraits of 3.______
indeendence: the entire family—mother, father, children,
even grandparents—live in a small house and working 4._______
together to support each other. Anyone understood the life 5._______
and death importance of family cooperation and hard work.
Although most people in the United States no longer
live on farms, but the ideal of home ownership is just as 6._______
strong in the twentieth century as it was in the nineteenth.
When U.S, soldiers came home before World War Two, for 7.______
example, they dreamed of buying houses and starting
families. But there was a tremendous boom in home 8.______
building. The new houses, typically in the suburbs, were
often small and more or less identical, but it satisfied 9.______
a deep need. Many regarded the single-family
house the basis of their way of life. 10._____
3.started – start
5.Anyone – Everyone anyone
6.but去掉。
10.^as regard sth as 把……看作……

A recent survey in the United States showed that the
average family there spent more money on its pets
than on its children. Although this is a rather shocking
statistics, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the 1.______
doggy beauty parlors. It is possible that the Americans
are unique in treating their little friends this way, but 2.______
what information we do have suggest that the English 3.______
too, are blind in their attentions to the fancies of their
pets. This can clearly be seen where we look at pet foods, 4._______
which often contain more vitamins than human food,
or, at least are seldom more nutritious. They certainly 5.______
cost as much. Last year the British public spent two
hundred million pounds on pet food alone, say nothing 6.______
of veterinary bills and animal furniture. It is difficult
not to feel resentful about this when one considers what
the same amount could do with victims of starvation and 7._______
poverty, and it is not unusual for me to get hot undr the
collar when I read about anther old person who has left all
his money to a dog or cat. There are a variety of reasons
that I, personally, find the popularity of British pets 8._______
alarming. In other things they cause physical problems. 9._______
An example of this is New York where they have great
difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the
streets. Many people find this funny, but in the number 10._______
of large cities it is a major problem.
She worked hard at her task before she felt sure that the results would___her long effort.
A. justify B. testify C. rectify D. verify
但此处way 表”方式、方法”,“以这种方式”为in this way
3.suggest – suggests 本句主语为what information we do have(主语从句),动词应用第三人称单数suggests.
9.In – Among “among other things”
The number of “……的数目”,谓语动词用单数;而a number of “大量的”,谓语动词用复数。
选择答案:
A 在确信那个结果可以肯定她长期的努力之前,她会努力地攻克那个任务。
A 证明…

Some of the best-known fairy tales have existed for
hundreds of years. To have remained popular for such long 1.______
they must have a very powerful affect on the imaginations 2.______
of both children and adults. However, many ancient parents 3.______
feel uncomfortable telling certain fairy tales to their children
because they feel they are too cruel and frightened. Parents 4.______
may also feel that some of the ideas or values taught in fairy
tales are not appropriate for young children.
The problem can be seen by looking to a story such as
“Hansel and Gretel”. In this story a cruel stepmother convinces
her weak husband that they could abandon their children in 5.______
the forest and leave them die because they are so poor there is 6.______
not enough for them all to eat. Against his wished, the father
takes his young children, Hansel and Gretel, into the forest
and leaves them. Alone, frightened, and hungry, the children
wander about the forest unless they discover a wonderful house. 7.______
And they immediately begin to eat parts of the houses. While
they are eating, an old woman came out and asks them to 8.______
come into the house. As she seems friendly, the children gladly
enter, but the old woman turns to be a wicked witch. She 9.______
puts Hansel in a cage and tries to fatten him so that she can
eat him. The woman comes to visit Hansel every day to see
if he is fat enough, but he is able to fool the nearsighted old
woman by sticking at a bone, instead of his finger, out of the 10.______
cage for her to feel.
