The Appeal Court in London has cleared a man of a murder conviction, for which he spent 27 years in prison, almost half his life. In one of Britain’s most notorious cases of wrongful imprisonment, the appeal by Sean Hodgson was heard after serious doubts emerged about forensic material used during his trial. Danny Shaw reports.

Sean Hodgson listened to proceedings from the dock, alongside a legal advisor. He looked pale and gaunt. Mr Hodgson was found guilty in 1982 of murdering Teresa De Simone in Southampton. She’d been raped and strangled. But the court heard the new DNA tests from 20 swabs from the scene of the murder proved that he had not carried out the attack. The Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge said the DNA evidence demolished the prosecution case. It emerged that the Forensic Science Service wrongly told Mr Hodgson’s lawyers 11 years ago that there were no remaining samples from the crime scene for testing.
