Chinese population experts say their country will have 30 million more men of marriageable age than women by 2020, making it difficult for young men to find wives. The State Population and Family Planning Commission said the sex imbalance might lead to social instability.
From Beijing, Daniel Griffith reports.
China’s strict family planning laws have produced a massive gap between the number of men and women here. A traditional preference for boys has made that many women have aborted their babies rather than have a girl. With financial support from the state gradually disappearing, China’s one-child policy has already led to major problems. With many single children faced with the prospect of supporting two parents and four grandparents well into their old age.
