Officials in Japan have confirmed that the bird flu virus found at a poultry farm is the deadly H5N1 strain of the disease. It’s the first such case in Japan in three years. The farm affected is on the Island of Kyushu / Kiushu in the south of Japan.
From Tokyo, Christopher Hogg reports.
“All the birds on the farm have been culled and been incinerated. The authorities say no one has fallen ill. The next challenge is to find out how the chickens became infected. Tests on droppings found in the area suggest there’s no sign of the virus in wild birds. So it’s unlikely that migratory birds brought it to Japan. The farm has been disinfected and officials will begin checking 16 farms within a ten-kilometer radius of the outbreak on Wednesday.
