The senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat has said that unity talks between the Palestinian Hamas-led government and the more moderate Fatah faction of President Mahmoud Abbas will go ahead later today. The talks in Damascus were feared to have collapsed over differences on policy with Israel and control of the Palestinian security forces.
From Damascus, Rachel Harvey reports.
After a morning of confusing, often contradictory messages, Fatah and Hamas officials are once again talking positively about the chances of this key meeting taking place. It’s understood that high-ranking Syrian officials have intervened to try to bring two sides together. But after a Saturday’s abrupt postponement, nobody here is taking anything for granted. The majority of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip are desperately hoping for signs of an end to the internal conflict which has caused such bitter divisions and diverted them from the one cause behind which they can unite, striving to end Israeli occupation.
