The Communist Party in the Chinese city of Shanghai has expelled nine of its leading figures who’ve been accused of corruption in connection with a huge pension fund scandal. They’ll now face criminal charges. Quentin Sommerville reports.
The nine people kicked out of the Communist Party represent some of the most senior figures among Shanghai’s political and business elite. The dismissed politicians include Zhu Junyi, Director of the city’s powerful Labor and Pension Bureau. The state-controlled media says the officials stand accused of taking huge bribes, immoral behavior and leading decadent（adj.颓废的 n.颓废者） lifestyles. All nine are accused of profiting from the city’s pension fund. Investments in illegal and risky land deals lost the fund and estimated $475 million.
