The Chinese authorities say it’s too soon to bring in a tax on fuel, although they hope to introduce one in the future. The Chinese Finance Minister Jin Renqing told parliament that a fuel tax would heavily increase the financial burden on the Chinese people. From Beijing, Daniel Griffith reports.
China’s booming economy is sucking up oil, and that’s creating two big problems. Demanded so great that fuel shortages are now common. Burning fossil fuels on such a large scale is also leading to massive environmental pollution. China is already the world’s second largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US. Many argue that the best way to deal with both these issues would be to introduce a fuel tax. The government has been debating the issue for years, but it’s still not ready to take the plunge.
