Speaking at the close of the Chinese Parliament, Mr. Wen said the priorities were to narrow the income gap and create better social security networks, both in wealthy cities and poor rural areas. From Beijing, Dan Griffith has more details.
China’s economy is growing at record levels, but it’s very uneven. Large cities are doing well. The countryside is moving forward, but at a much slower rate. This wealth gap is leading to growing unrest, with the government admitting that there’re now tens of thousands of protests across China every year. The country’s leaders believe that this is one of their most pressing problems.
A proposal to ban international companies from using the word “coca(古柯--南美及西印度群岛所产的一种药用植物)” in their names has been accepted by a panel redrafting the Bolivian Constitution. Bolivia’s coca farmers argue that the leaf is part of their country’s cultural heritage and deserve similar protection to other well-known regional products such as champagne and parmesan(用脱脂乳制成的坚硬的意大利干酪) .
