今天的节目涉及常规应试写作和笔译练习的基本要求,后面的作业请大家选择做

Today I’ll explain some tips for English writing and translation in class as well as in exams.

I. Writing:
1) A clearly-stated opinion in obvious position(明确地在明显的位置陈述观点).

We need to present our opinions clearly and firmly at the beginning of the passage. It’s better to hold one-side point of view than a both-side view.

i.e, it’s not favored if a topic given to us is both positively and negatively discussed except that we are required to analyze both advantages and disadvantages.

Take the Nude Photos Scandal(艳照门) as an example. 我们需要习惯只持一方观点,并使之有理有据。

2) A concise conclusion(简练有力的结论):

A concise and firm conclusion is essential in that it stresses the main opinion in another way and leave space for reader’s consideration.

3) Avoid cliché and too common expressions (用自己的话表达,避免太多的套话)

It’s recommended to use our own words in a composition. Individuality is a key for one’s writing. Be unique and try to put your idea in a sound way.

II. Translation
1) Don’t change the order of the original sentence too much. 尽量保留原文顺序和语意逻辑。

e.g: China braces for Olympic wedding blitz -- The Chinese government is bracing itself for a rush of people wishing to marry when the summer Olympics kick off on August 8 -- because the number carries a special significance in Chinese culture, the state news agency said Sunday. (CNN, Jan.28,2008)
中国迎来奥运结婚风潮——中国政府将迎来一大批人希望在8月8日夏季奥运会开幕日结婚——因为这个数字在中国的文化中有特殊的意义,国家新闻社(新华社)周日报道。

2) Use common expressions rather than idioms or set expressions esp. in E-C translation. 避免随意地应用熟语和成语。

e.g. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Inaugural Address, March 4, 1933)
In translating this sentence, some students use “付诸东流’to match “paralyzes needed efforts”, it’s acceptable but should be avoided.

3) 确定句中代词的所指对象。
e.g. In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things.
这里的 “they” 代指什么呢?

练习:

1. 听音频,翻译下面这段话
按此在新窗口浏览图片
values have shrunken to fantastic levels; taxes have risen; our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income; the means of exchange are frozen in the currents of trade; the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.

2. 听音频,根据老师给的翻译写出原句:

让我坚定地陈述我的信念:我们唯一要惧怕的就是恐惧本身——无名的,无由的,无理的恐慌阻滞了我们把衰退转变为进步所需的努力。
