1)A crowded highway bridge has collapsed into the Mississippi River in the Midwest US city of Minneapolis killing at least 7 people. Witnesses say they heard a loud rumbling noise before the interstate 35w bridge broke into large sections Wed. evening and fell into the river 20m below taking dozens of cars along with it. Minnesota governer Tim Pawlenty does not think it was an act of terrorism.

2) The US and Britain have circulated a new draft resolutions among the members of UN Security Council proposing an expanded role for the world body in Iraq. The draft circulated late Wed. and calls for an extension by one year of the mandate of UN exsisting mission in Iraq ,the current mandate expires next week.The draft proposed to authorize UN to facilitate regional dialogue including on issues of border security,energy and refugees, and also calls for the UN to advise support and assist in the review of Iraqi constitution in implementing its previsions as well as its developing process to resolving internal disbutes.
3) South Korea and US agree not to use force to free 21 remaining South Korean hostages held by Taliban in Afghanistan. The delegation of South Korean lawmakers have travelled to the US to persuage Washington to help end hostage stand-off. A proported Taliban spokesman said Wed. the hostages are still alive but it's possible they will be killed. He also warned rescue operation will jeopardize the hostages' lives. The kidnappers have already killed 2 hostages. The militants want Afghan gov't to exchange Taliban prisoners for the remaining captives.
