The human eye can distinguish over one million shades of color. Pantone, a world-renowned __________(权威) on color, has chosen to work with 1,000+ hues, each with its own name and code. One Pantone color may be found on a __________(眩目的) dress at a New York fashion show. Another may be painted on the walls of a dining room or found on the matching dishes on the table. For people in industries from fashion to home decorating, choosing the appropriate Pantone shade really matters.

A color standard
Pantone introduced the first standard for colors in 1963 called the Pantone Matching System. The system was originally created to help cosmetic companies _________ (复制,繁殖) colors by giving them the exact amounts of dye required for each. The system has now come into use by many industries. “If color is a language, Pantone is the Oxford English Dictionary,” wrote J.C. Herz in the magazine Wired. In the global business world, this “color dictionary” is essential. Because of it, an engineer designing a cell phone case in California and the __________(生产商)making it in Shanghai see same color.

Seasons of color
Pantone does more than just define color. After __________ _(商议) with experts in several industries, Pantone puts together and sells its predictions for the next season’s “hot” colors. Called “color” forecasting,” these predictions allow traditionally creative industries like fashion to have something to place their bets on. Suppose , for example, “baby blue” is _________(预言) to be a big hit next spring. Dye makers respond by making more baby blue dye for fabric makers. And they, in turn, produce more baby blue fabric for clothing manufacturers. If a designer proposes a design for shirts in baby blue, company managers have some __________(确信)the shirts will sell. Hopefully, costly mistakes are prevented. “Being wrong with color can really hurt you,” commented Anne Cashill, a fashion industry __________(专业人士) “it’s good to be different, but it’s not a good thing to be completely out in left field.”

Of course, customers don’t know that Pantone predicted they would like the color of the baby blue shirts hanging in a store. They really don’t need to know. They only need to decide if they’ll buy one, which is Pantone’s hope!
