One night in 1929, the owner of a struggling toy company, Edwin Lowe, stopped at a country carnival. Because of the late hour, everything was closed except one game stand, which was crowded with people waiting to play. When Lowe went over to check it out, he saw that each player had a small, square card with numbers. As the caller yelled out numbers, those having matching numbers on their cards covered that space with a bean. Players won by covering all the numbers in a v_______ （垂直的）, h_______ (水平的) or d_______ (对角线的) row. They then shouted “Beano!” and were awarded a prize. At three in the morning, people were still waiting to play. Edwin Lowe became c_______ (确信的) that his “beano” game was something he could sell.

After returning home, he began developing his own form of the game and invited friends over to try it out. On one occasion, a friend became so excited when she covered her squares that she mistakenly yelled out “B-B-B-BINGO!” And the rest is history.

The game’s origins reach back further than 1929. An early form of bingo was first played in Italy in 1530. The game later m___________ (idiom: 进入) to other countries, including France, Germany and America. Today, bingo is extremely popular with 1 million players in the United States and 3 million players in the United Kingdom. That total includes some celebrity players such as Jennifer Lopez and U2’s Bono. Bingo is also riding a wave of popularity in the States with popular TV game show, National Bingo Night.

More than just a game of pure e________ （娱乐）, bingo is also praised for its social benefits. According to psychology r_______ (研究人员) Julie Winstone, “A lot of people who go to bingo have said it is one of the only times they leave the house.”

Those who play find bingo games in churches, nursing homes and bingo parlors. And prizes are a major part of the popularity, with everything from cheap gifts to jackpots worth hundreds of dollars. Many players play m_______ (许多的) cards, hoping for that one lucky card that will give them a bingo!

Introduction of Bingo: 宾果游戏通常在游戏厅里进行，游戏规则和付奖方式各地不同。通常，在经营场所都有小册子详细介绍宾果游戏规则和支付方式。宾果游戏使用的卡片常见的是 5x5的，即5行5列，对应5个字母B-I-N-G-O。美国宾果的数字在75以内随机抽取，英国和澳大利亚的宾果是在90以内随机抽取，通常有专业人士叫号，就像拍卖会上的拍卖师一样。通常在1-15中选择B对应的数字，16-30中选择I对应的数字，31-45中选择N对应的数字，46-60中选择G 对应的数字，61-75中选择O对应的数字。游戏者根据叫号，迅速找到在卡上的这些数字，比如叫13、25、40、59、72，有人率先在卡片上找到了这些数字，然后就喊“BINGO”并做出标记，只要有一个游戏者根据叫号，描出了BINGO图案，那么这一轮的游戏就算结束，随后开始下一轮的游戏。
