According to a report released today, investment fund managers are not uniformly complying with obligations imposed by the Australia Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), requiring them to disclose the extent to which they follow ethical investment practices. The report said that investment mangers are putting long-term investment return at risk by not adequately integrating considerations of environment and social issue in their investment decision-making.

The Corporations Act and ASIC guidelines require companies offering investment products to disclose the extent to which labor standards or environmental, social or ethical considerations were taken into account in the selection, retention or realization of an investment.

‘A comprehensive review of publicly available product disclosure statement shows that although many fund mangers claim to take the environment and other ethical considerations into account, more often than not they fail to give any details on how this is done’, the report said, “The guideline are clear: if you claim to give weight to ethical considerations, you have to tell investors what you criteria and methodology are.”

The report also concluded that some mainstream investment mangers are taking a narrow, reactive view of how sustainability issues affect investment returns. Some funds seem to take the position that they’ll look at environmental or social issues if they presents a ‘risk’, but they don’t appreciate the strategic advantages of positive performance in those areas. Such funds will miss out on the investment opportunities gained by the more visionary companies, who obtain a long-term competitive advantage arising out of innovation and sustainability.
