A Chinese warship has arrived in Japan on the first navel visit since the 1930s. An exchange of navel visit was first planned seven years ago but cancelled because of dispute over interpretations of Japan’s war time invasion of China. Our Tokyo correspondent Christ Hogg watched the vessel dock.

“There was much pomp and pageantry as the Chinese warship drop anchor in Tokyo Bay. Such visits, though symbolic, are important. As much concern in Japan about China’s military build-up, a senior Chinese officer speaking in Tokyo insisted that China’s efforts to modernize its armed forces were transparent and designed with self-defense in mind. The opportunity for senior officers from both countries to meet like this can help to build a sense of trust.”
