Lust | Caution, a not-so-well-known novel written by Ms. ZhangAiling, has now becomes a rather heated topic, owing to LiAn’s new movie with the same title on which it based on.
Unwilling to be immersed in innumerous and various comments without my own opinion, I finally decided to watch it and found my own say.
Before watching it, I assumed as a matter of course that it is a patriotic movie, as it is about a group of patriotic college students planning some patriotic moves. However, it is not.
And it is also not a movie of the usual kind, because villains haven’t been killed and justice hasn’t been done. It shows the destruction of a woman, who is virtuous, patriotic and innocent, devotes herself to her pure love and dream and finally becomes destructed because of her last consciousness for love.
In my opinion, it has nothing to do with patriotism and politics. It is just a revelation of a woman’s life: her choices, inner struggles and final consequences.
I sympathize with her for her selflessness and determination. She is definitely patriotic and willing to devote anything to her country. That is why she lost her virgin body and why she was so determined to accept this task even when given a pill of poison in case of failure.
I lament her for her innocence and silliness. What she wished is right, but what she did is wrong. Saving a country is not simply killing one person or two. As a student, nothing would be more effective than learning more for her country’s tomorrow need.
And I understand her for her final consciousness for love, or rather softhearted action to the quisling. It is said that women are emotional animals. Even a common greeting will touch her soul. When WangJiazhi told Mr. Yi to go away with tears full of her eyes, it wasn’t because of the huge diamond ring, but Yi’s true love for her.
Anyway, this is a movie worth watching, maybe not once.
