This Thirsday (Thursday) is Thanksgiving day in the United States. Americans traditionally gather for a large holiday meal with family and friends. most schools are also closed Friday for Thanksgiving break. some students get all week off. so where does this leave to international students? we ask a few colleges and universities around the country for this week’s report in our foreign student series. XX has 29 international students this year at the students’(out of a student) population of about 800. XX, is the director of international programs. he says teachers and coachers invite international students to their homes for thanksgiving. professor XX has（is having） 6 or 7 at his house for the holiday. XX is the director of international student programs at Emory university. she says school groups organized meals for the more than 1500 international students at Emory. local organizations also get involved like a group called atlant (Atlanta) ministry with international students. it arranges for students at atlant(Atlanta) area to celebrate  thanksgiving with American families.

   XX， is a public health professor at Columbia university in New York, his area is environmental health sciences. One day 9 years ago, he and his students developed an idea. They imagined people in cities growing crops inside a tall building. Tomatoes could grow on one floor of the skyscraper. Potatoes on the next, small aniamals and fish on the floor above. You get the idea. This vertical farming or farm scrape could have spaces for restaurants or other places that serve food like schools or hospitals . they could serve foods that are truly locally grown . the building could even produce its own energy. It could have witer(wind turbines) on the top . but why would anyone want to farm indoors in the city. XX believes it would  become necessary. The world should find enough places to produce enough food to feed the growing population. XX says it is an all important issue. The professor also points to problems in(of ) traditional farms . they use a lot of fresh water, their fertelizer (fertilizer)and animal waste can pollute water resources. And their growing seasons can be limited.  

   Children’s metal health was the two subjects of recent studies. One involved treatment of anxiety disorders. The other examines(examined) long-term effects of alcohol use in teenagers. The first study involved about 500 children in united states ages 7 to 17. they had moderate two (to) severe disorders involving worries and fears. For treatment, one group received zoloft , an antideprent (antidepressant) drug. Another group received cugni (cognitive) behavior therapy. sometimes called the tugging (talking)treatment . therapists talk the children about anxiety. And guide them through struggle test(structured tasks) to help them face their fears . a third group received both the medicine and the therapy. Was the leader .he says the studies clearly show that combination treatment is the most effective . 81 percent of the children treated with both the medicine and cognitive behavior therapy improved. But doctors says the medicine or therapy alone also showed good results. 60 percent of the therapy only group improved as did 55 percent of Zoloft-only group  .

   For example, there is a site for children kids.mongabay.com. another one wild(wildmadagascar).org is all about the Ireland nations that XX calls his favorite place . he travels the world on several major trips each year. His working tools are a laptop computer, cameras and sometimes diving equipment. He often calls on experts for information for stories. For example, he interviewed XX, a pop expert on ringtailed lemurs, and last week he wrote about another animal the rare snow leopard. He interviewed XX a biologist who established this low level of(the Snow Leopard) conservancy . stories like these have led mongabay XX a favorite place  on the internet for researchers , students and teachers. In April,Time.com named it one of  the 50(10) top team climate and environment websites. XX says he is concerned about how the current economic crisis in the world might affect environmental conservation efforts. For example, he says the falling price of oil could reduce interests in developing solar power, but he also points too in his recent united nations report on green jobs, the report said efforts to fight climate change might led to millions of jobs in mill(biofuels) by 2030.  

    12 years ago, a young traveler named XX from San Francisco visited the XX rain forest. in one area of the rain forest, he watched that (as an orangutan) moved through the trees. it was a sight to remember, in a place to remember. but weeks later back home .XX got the news that the trees have been cut for their wood in the area he visited. that experience led XX to begin writing a book about rain  forests and threats to their resistance. but he did not publish the book. instead in 1999, he used his research for the book to create a website, the site is mongabay.com. the name is spelled mongabay. XX named the site for mongabay and Ireland . his purpose is to inform the public about the topic of rain forest. but the subject widened .a former business man , he became a respected writer of  science and enviromental stories. the popularity of mongabay.com attracted by(advertiser) .small as(ads) on the size pay for its operation . mongabay has grown and led to other sites.

    next, make sure that the school offers what you need. do you need a degree or will a certificate or license be enough. another consideration is cost. often the published price does not include all the costs like books , technology requirements can also add to the costs. would you need to get  new software or a high speed internet connection  or even a computer to take the classes you want. also , onsider the level of interaction that the online program offers. you might never meet the teacher or other  students in person. you need to be able to work without  the supervision that you might find in the traditional class. finally, and this is our own advice. find out what other say. you might search on the internet for commons or readings (comments or ratings) the schools that might interest you. just remember that what people say is not always  fair or true . so now we have talked about getting an American education online. next week, we begin explaining the steps to getting  an  American education.    

    This week in our foreign student series we talk about getting an American education on line. A student named XX has recently written to us from Indonia(Indonesia) asking about a good online university. Finding the right online program requires research just like a traditional education. Talking to advisors and recruiters can help. Keep in mind though that they might have their financial interests to direct to certain programs, avoid a diploma mill. we talk about this last week. diploma mills also known as degree mills are nothing more than business. The education is poor quality if they even require any class work to get a degree. The council on higher education accreditation or Chea recognizes a group in Washington DC to accredit schools that offers distance learning. 110 programs in the united states or 6 other countries are accredited by the distance education and training council. We asked the executive director XX for advice on choosing a distance learning program. He says the first thing is to go on chea website to find if the school is accredited. The address is chea.org.   

    Other leading causes of deaths are lung diseases, cancers of windpipe , cancers of lung , road accidents, low birth rate. the research also shows that between the ages of 50 and 60, men have much higher risk of death than women. The research says this is mainly because of injuries from violence including war. The study found that the Middle East produced 55 % of world’s war death in 2004. the Middle East has about 8 percent of the world population. Africa has the highest risk of death for men under 60 followed by eastern Europe. The report says early deaths in eastern Europe are mostly the result of injuries and heart and lung disease. But death from alcohol poisoning is still common. Worldwide almost 50 percent of deaths in women of reproductive age in 2004 Were related to pregnancy. More than 500,000 women died of preventable problems during pregnancy or child birth. Another finding in the report is a prediction that by 2030 tobacco will cause 10 percent of all deaths worldwide.

    The same is true for milk machines, milking areas and pasture lands. The cleaner, the better, he says. Milkers should always wash their hands. And in the united states , teats must be disinfected with iodine or other chemical disinfectant before milking. And then they are cleaned before a milking device used. Teat engine(injuries) can also cause mastitis. So Be careful during milking. XX says mastitis is commonly the number one problem of dairy farmers worldwide. But lately other concerns about the safety of milk products have increased. This follows the discovery of a poisonous industrial chemical in large amounts  of Chinese milk. Health officials in china say, the problem has been corrected. But the situation is a reminder of the importance of milk safety measures. Researchers at Cornell are working with American dairy farmers on new systems .XX seizes(sees) a lot of promise in tank monetary (bulk-tank monitoring) system . milk is captured (kept) cold in large tanks where it is continuously mixed .this way, Any testing sample is considered a good representation of all the milk . less than 100 leters (milliliters) is all the milk needed for laboratory tests for bacterial , virus diseases and other threats.

    Cows , sheep, goats and other animals can get mastitis and influmation in the other organ that milk will produce(an inflammation in the udder, the organ where milk is produced). Milk from untreated cow is still relatively safe to drink. But the milk is full of white blood cells that sick (thicken) and make the milk go bad more quickly. Gold(goat) milk though might still look normal. The more cells , the lower price that farmers can get for it . in the united states , If milk contains too many cells, it can not legally be sold. One sign of mastitis is credit (cracked) skin on the tissue (teats), also the other(udder) becomes hot painful and in large(enlarged) and the animals may not eat. Mastitis can spread as a bacterial infection . so infected animals should be milked separately from uninfected ones . flies can also spread the bacterial . about 10 percent of cases are so severe that the cow dies or never returns to good production . but antibiotics can treat most cases. American farmers have to throw away milk produced during treatment because the rules (of rules against antibiotic residues) in milk . XX at Cornell University says the best way to prevent mastitis is to keep the animals clean.
